there is a lot to see and do in Penang and I would recommend visits to these major attractions,as well as soaking up the sun and lazing on the beach at Batu Ferringhi and going on a shopping orgy in Georgetown First head for the Penang Botanical Gardens which is located just off Jalan Waterfall. They occupy some 30 hectares and the gardens have a really good collection of Malaysian fauna and flora. There are hundreds of trees and flowering plants and dozens of nurseries ,plant houses, fern gardens and lily ponds. The place is also well known for its friendly Rheses Monkeys. At Teluk Bahang there is a huge Butterfly Farm with more than 3,000 living specimens of over 50 species. The farm itself occupies a one hectare site and there is a garden enclosure, breeding area, labs, souvenir shop and exhibition area. Also at Teluk Bahang is the 100 hectares Forest Recreation Park which also serves as a centre of research for botany and zoology. A Museum houses exhibits of tropical timber and there are also freshwater pools, foothpaths, rest huts and a kiddies playground. Make a visit to the Kek Lok Si-the largest Buddhist Temple Complex in Malaysia. The temple is dominated by the seven-tier Ban Po Thar pagoda which rises some 30 metres. The remple is at Air Itam. Finally set aside some time for a trip up Penang Hill, which at 830 metres high,is a pleasant 3 or 4 degrees C cooler than the lowlands. Journey to the top in the funicular railway-the views from the peak over Georgetown are magnificent.!
Advantages: Exotic. Colourful. Disadvantages: Noisy. The smells are powerful
Penang is a cosmopolitan place and an interesting ethnic quarter is "Little India" which is the area around Market Street, This street is a colourful cacophony of sounds, sights and smells. In this enclave you will come across incense,a wide variety of spices, ancient Indian medicines, flower garlands, sarees, textiles, and pictures of the Bollywood film stars. Hindi films, and to a lesser extent,Tamil films are very, very, popular in Penang.
Most of ... ...area there are Indian Muslim shops.Among the local Penang Tamils,Market street is called Kadai Teru which means "Street of Shops" but the British during the Colonial era knew it as "Chola Place".Sometimes it was called "Little Madras".
Little India,I should add,is a great place not only for shopping but also for eating. Here you will find a good selection of both South Indian restaurants serving curries on banana leaf and mamak or Indian Muslim ...

Advantages: Fascinating architecture Disadvantages: non
Kek Lok Si is the largest Buddhist temple in Penang. It took 70 years to complete this exotic architeture. I remember climbing a flight of staircase that brought me to the temple, it is lined with many many stalls where you can pick your souvenirs and prepared to be surprised by what the locals sell! The architecture of the pagoda is the main attraction to me. You can see from the foot hill as it is very striking. It is a blend of Chinese, Thai and ... ...and colours are briliantly merged such that the pagoda stands out from the background of green hills. It is open to everyone and it is free! It is a nice walk to hill top, a chance to soak yourself in the Buddhist serenity. Don't miss it if you happen to be in Penang Island. ...

Advantages: Cheap/Food/Shopping/Visa runs from thailand Disadvantages: Expensive Taxis
Georgetown was the town that I liked very much. Had some great shops and the prices were also good. Hotels were a lot cheaper than Kuala Lumpur.
A trip across the suspension bridge to the mainland is worth doing. Also get a 360-degree view of Georgetown and go to the top of Komtar building. Like me - Don't tell the staff when you reach the top that you want to "base jump". They won't find you funny and will call security. It may sound kind of odd, ... ...KFC I've been to. Georgetown was defiantly the place to go shopping. Loads of computer stuff and loads of places to eat all at great prices.
The only thing that I found to be expensive were the Taxis. Which were about at the same rate as the UK. If you need to hire a motorbike or car you will need to show your UK driving licence. So don't forget to take it!

Advantages: The Sand, Food, Scenery - everything really Disadvantages: You have to go at the right time of year as it is very often hot and very humid
Penang is a small island off the main Malay coastline. It is very aptly nicknamed the Pearl of the Orient as it is a real jewel. Although it has become a very popular tourist attraction, it still remains an asset to Malaysia. Penang boasts a great market in Georgetown, a fantasic butterfly farm, batic (silk painting) factories and food to dye for.
The island also has many hotels ranging from the reasonable priced to the luxury five star ones.
