We checked in at Gatwick and the ticketless check in worked like a dream and we didn't even need our confirmation number, the check in staff worked on our names. We didn't even have to queue although I suspect that we were just lucky about that!
Our flight out was about 20 minutes late departing but arrived more or less on time and coming back, we took off exactly on time and were back about 20 minutes early - not bad for a 90 minute schedules flight.
In the air, the plane was clean and comfortable although wasn't a Germanwings plane. I understand the service was being operated by another airline in order that Germanwings could evaluate a new type of aircraft. The staff were German but all spoke english and seemed quite friendly. As a budget aireline, food and drink were not included, and whilst I didn't buy anything, the prices seemed reasonable.
When checking in on our way back, Germanwings had an entire terminal to themselves and therefore you could check in at any desk which meant there was very little queueing.
I would be more than happy to fly with Germanwings again but unfortunately they only fly from the UK to Cologne and Stuttgart.
Advantages: cheap, nice aircraft Disadvantages: take off times
This was the first time I had used a 'budget' airline flying from Birmingham Airport to Cologne - the only direct flight available - previously we had to fly into Dusseldorf by BA and get a taxi (£60).
The flight was cheap (£13.00 per person - each way) and the plane was brand new. It left on time and arrived on time both ways so no complaints there. Food and Drink was extra but quite reasonably priced - coffee £2.00 a cup. The flights were about ... ...Plenty of leg space and no extra charges for luggage. What do you expect for £13.00?
Only two small gripes - the take off times, 7.40am from Birmingham (at airport 6.40am) and 6.40am (UK time - 5.40am) back from Cologne together with a feeling that it was a case of 'all pile on' whilst boarding.
But then again, What do you expect for £13.00! ...

Advantages: Modern, clean and organised Disadvantages: Distance from London. Getting there by road

Ryanair, easyJet, Kibris Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Blue Air, Snowjet, Germanwings, Air Berlin, Atlantic Airways, Aurigny, Turkish Airlines, Air Asia, Cyprus Airways, Iceland Express and Norwegian.
I must admit, that when I was there, I got the distinct impression that Ryanair was the main user, and got the impression that Ryanair had the majority of desks, and watching incoming and outgoing flights, I say numerous Ryanair planes, and only saw two easyJet planes.
Stansted, apparently is Britain?s third busiest airport, and currently has flights to over 160 destinations in over 30 countries. This I can perfectly believe, as on my outward trip, even though the flight was due to go out at 7 o?clock in the morning, having arrived at 4 o?clock in the morning, I was simply amazed as to how many travellers were already there ...
Advantages: Well run German Airport Disadvantages: Display screens not updated quickly enough
having its own function. Floor 1 is the train station (more below) and floor two is the arrivals level. (Be warned if you are meeting people at the airport that the arrivals lounge for fights arriving at terminal one or two has two exits and it can be hard to see both at the same time!). The third floor is the predominantly departures and as Stuttgart is a hub for both Germanwings and Hapag-Lloyd Express, there are a lot of check in desks for these companies. Make sure that you know where you are going because although HLX appear to have all check ins at the same point, Germanwings international and regional flights are at different points. The fourth level is full of travel agents etc and the fifth is a viewing platform (more below).

I've been traveling threw this airport twice in 2005. It's very small and over crowded. Sometimes to get somewhere I have to squeeze between people. It's got nice country side and is situated outside Krakow
