Brave Burgers

Advantages: a beautiful town with a cosy atmosphere
Disadvantages: none

Last summer I was in Bamberg, a town of about 70.000 inhabitants (plus 10.000 students during term time) in Upper Franconia which forms the northern part of the German land Bavaria because I had never been there before and had heard good things about it. I went there by train, from experience I know that only big German cities have a tourist information office in the central train station, smaller cities and towns have it somewhere in the centre. ...
...I had stayed overnight in Bamberg, but I didn’t want to try it in the middle of a hot afternoon, I wouldn’t have noticed much afterwards, heehee. And I would certainly have stumbled, the town is deffo not made for the handicapped, not only is it up and down all the time, many streets are paved with cobblestones. I read in the official brochure (which I obtained at last on my way back to the station) that a guided tour takes two hours, I spent five ...

...a few miles upriver from Speyer, and discussions about the Protestant Reformation continued at similar Diets in Speyer in the decades that followed. The Thirty Years' War, and the conflicts that followed, saw Speyer change hands on a regular basis - Spanish, Swedish, French and imperial German troops all took possession at various times, with the result that Speyer was all but razed to the ground and just the walls of the cathedral remained as a ...

Visit Historical Koblenz

Advantages: All the appeal of other German Cities - old and new together
Disadvantages: Can get busy on an evening driving through the town

Koblenz - what a city. It doesn't seem to hold all the commerical appeal of the other popular German cities but as a regular visitor be assured it has. From the shopping areas to the parks, to the promenade on the Rhine with the boats in summer and all the cafes, overshadowed by the Erbenstein fortress magnificent in the fading sunlight to the brilliant Deutsches Ecke. Sat and enjoyed the atmosphere of the World Cup in 2006 in 'fan fest' and the ...
...alive - so did the shops. Koblenz has a history all of its own and shares the geographical interest of being where the Rhine and Moselle meet - at the Deutsches Ecke guarded by the Kaiser. The sheer size of the monument makes it hard to imagine how severe flooding almost submerged him some years ago. From Koblenz railway station you can travel across Germany into Austria and has just completed full refurbishment which makes it more accessible. ...

Woman driver let loose on German Autobahns!

Advantages: No speed limits!
Disadvantages: Er - people drive really fast...

...you*** For any kind of driving in Germany, you need to take your full driving licence (both card and paper parts if you have the more recent type), insurance certificate (third party only is OK), headlamp converters, GB sticker (if your number plate does not feature it - we got a magnetic one in WHSmith for a whopping £5.99!), First Aid kit, hazard warning triangle (although legally you don't need one unless you break down) and cash (just in case ...
...this. As someone who likes driving fairly fast, I found this most liberating but I wasn't prepared to do the Grand Prix speeds that some of the cars were passing me at! On a typical three-lane autobahn, I found that the lorries would hog the inside lane, the middle lane would be for the majority of cars (who on average would be doing around 130-150km/h (78-93mph) and then the outside lane was usually empty, apart from a few cars that absolutely bomb ...

A place to sunbathe, relax, walk and explore

Advantages: fair entrance fees, lots of things to do
Disadvantages: ---

When I'm somewhere in a fairly big city I'm always looking for possibilities to relax and enjoy the silence, far away from traffic and busy people. This applies for holidays just as much as for my every day life and one nice place to do so is the "Westfalenpark" in Dortmund, Germany. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Some information about Dortmund ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ...
...be more precise: It's belonging to the federal state of "North-Rhine-Westphalia" and is in the region of the "Ruhrgebiet" (after the river Ruhr). With its 588.168 inhabitants it is the sixth-biggest city in Germany. Formerly well-known because of its coal- beer- and steal-industry, it now is an important IT- and service industry location. Dortmund also is famous for its football team "Borussia Dortmund" and quite a few of you probably have heard ...
