Do you know your Panga from your Pollock?
Advantages: FISH! Lots of fish and as fresh as you'll find it anywhere Disadvantages: Not a great choice if you don't like fish, I suppose.
...to the railway station and Fisherman was very close by - just across the Bahnhofsplatz and a few doors along on the road opposite. Getting in was the first challenge as the door is, to put it politely, a bit sticky. With a hearty shove it eventually flew open and we headed inside. It was about 7.15 pm which is by no means early in Germany but at that time only one other table was taken. Iris reassured me that the place had only opened a few weeks ... ...expect to be disappointed.
Fisherman is open daily from 11.30 to 23.00, serving the lunch menu between 11.30 and 15.00. The restaurant seats up to 110 people and has a separate room with it's own hi-tech ventilation system for those who want to smoke which is fine with me as I've suffered too many smoky German restaurants in the past and am a massive fan of their introduction of new legislation to make dining more pleasant for those who want to ...

Watching the Pennies on Queer Street
Advantages: The food was OK Disadvantages: The service was shocking
...my interpretation of puttanesca. The Delano website lists the ingredients of the puttanesca as tomatoes, chilli, capers, anchovies and garlic oil. Am I crazy to think that's going to be a tomato-based sauce? If in doubt, check wikipedia - where I learned puttanesca is named for the prostitutes of Naples and is, in effect, a 'tarted-up' tomato sauce. So I wasn't imagining it and I really couldn't blame my translation. The dish was OK, the capers and ... ...better with a proper sauce rather than a rather oily mess. I had to leave the bottom layer of the dish because it was just swimming in oil.
Once we'd finished our dishes we thought that dessert or drinks would just be risky after the awful service we'd had up to that point. We asked for the bill from two other waitresses before one of them sent our original waitress over with it. The bill wasn't large at just over €18 (certainly well within what ...

Dinner at the Museum - not as daft as it sounds
Advantages: The food and service are great, the portions are enormous and the prices are good. Disadvantages: Don't order too much or you'll never finish.
Strange as it might seem, when I visit the German town of Bremen, my favourite place to eat is at the Ubersee Restaurant, located on the ground floor of the Ubersee Museum. It's not just me - the colleagues in our local office always seem to choose to eat there too whenever there are visitors in town.
For me and other visiting colleagues, there are two really good reasons that we like the Ubersee; its location is really close to both the hotel where ... ...meals are great value for money. Even when times are tough and the pound is really weak against the euro, nobody in the accounts department will be able to quibble over a bill from the Ubersee. I'm ashamed to say that I must have eaten in the restaurant about ten times before I ever got to actually look inside the museum but I can certainly recommend that too.
On one recent visit I arrived from Dusseldorf by train at the main station which is just ...

Bauhaus Style Beside the River
Advantages: Great location on a sunny day, good quality food Disadvantages: Dishes are really a bit TOO big for lunchtime.
I go to Bremen frequently and have visited this restaurant twice and know I'll be taken there again as it's a favourite of one of my contacts in the city. Whilst this review refers to my first visit in spring 2009, the second was every bit as good and it does seem to be a very dependable choice if you are in the area.
I knew it was going to be one of those days when I'd have to eat out for both lunch and dinner so I took precautions and skipped ... ...way I'd be able to do justice to three restaurant meals in one day and breakfast was the easiest one to sacrifice.
Luckily I'd had prior warning that my morning visit was likely to last well into the afternoon and lunch would be offered. I was visiting an agency we use in a lovely up-market residential area of Bremen and sure enough, at around 1pm when the growls from the stomachs of my two interlocutors - Uwe and Joerg - started to intrude on the ...

Pfifferlingen Fungus Frenzy
Advantages: Lovely staff, great food, outstanding bread, great value Disadvantages: Rather a small menu - might be too small for some.
...and re-alphabetised my bookshelves. Fortunately Bluhms in Bremen was one of the former experiences. I need to point out for the benefit of the grammar geeks amongst the readership, that the omission of the apostrophe is intentional and double-checked – I didn't just get it wrong.
Regular readers – well those that have a good memory anyway – may realise I spend a lot of time in Bremen and those paying particular attention will know my favourite dining ... ...of us had eaten at Bluhms before or knew anything about the place but it was a sheltered little street that meant we could eat outside without being blown over and there was something appealing about it that we just couldn't resist. I think it was something to do with the menu offering lots of dishes based on a seasonal wild mushroom called a pfifferlinge which my post-eating research revealed to be the German name for the chantarelle mushroom. Offer ...
