Corruption in the Catholic Church

Advantages: Great acting, thought-provoking, highly symbolic

The atheist news reporter Ruben and his family meanwhile are severely abused by various members of the community as being 'heretics' after he unveiled the Benito 'drug' story. In other words, Ruben becomes a villain for seeking the truth. Further Analysis: The acting in the film is first-class. Gael Garcia Bernal and Sancho Gracia in particular do a fine job of portraying the internal conflicts they face in the course of pursuing their vocations. Elsewhere, a combination of clever character development and emotive performances really brings great depth to each individual character. Review of El Crimen Del Padre Amaro (DVD)

The Last Temptation of a Mexican Priest

Advantages: Good story, well acted, food for thought
Disadvantages: May disturb Catholics. Slightly soap opera.

to allow Amelita to visit his retarded daughter Getsemani to teach her catechism. The plot develops to demonstrate the fall of Father Amaro from naive priest to one who blends into the corruption around him and this ultimately leads to tragedy. The good people such as Martin and Father Natalio fall victim to the corruption in different ways but the bad survive as we see that the corruption extends right back to the bishop. OK, this is all getting a bit involved but the plot develops wonderfully from an observation of a simple town into a sort of Shakespearean tragedy. I will not give away any more. Analysis -------- In a deeply Catholic country like Mexico this has been a very controversial film that has received much criticism for it's open attack on the Catholic church and it's dubious involvement in Mexican politics.
