I was in Barcelona last week for a few days and was pleased to find how speedy, reliable and cheap the Metro is. It's a substantial network with five lines, each with 15-20 stops, although the average tourist will tend to stick to the centre. Unlike London, there is only one price, and for £3 you can buy a ticket good for ten journeys. Cheap eh?
Maps and directions are clear. The five lines are colour coded, and large scale street maps are provided at stations which even show the layout of stations. Vey useful.
On the whole it feels pretty safe, although tourists should watch for the inevitable pickpockets. I got targetted by two men while getting on the train. One pretended to drop something and bent down in front of me, and the other felt around my back pocket. Luckily I'm not stupid enough to carry anything of value in there!

/Agree with you - getting around Barcelona is really easy whether you do the bus, metro or use the old pins. We walked for miles, in the heat, and managed to see so much. Good review Writing 321
