Having lived and worked in Berlin for a couple of years, I can strongly recommend anybody visiting this vibrant and cosmopolitan city. I unfortunately cannot speak the native language, but you get by very easily with the help of the friendly attitude of the German people. Getting around the city is made both incredibly easy and fun for you. You can buy a TAGESCARTE, which is the equivalent to a London travel card. This enables you to travel on the buses, U-bahn (underground trains), Ferries and some S-bahn (overland trains). It costs around the equivalent to four pounds, and is valid for one day, and is available to buy from the driver on the bus, or from the main U-bahn and bus station in the city centre. A route around the city which I would recommend, would be to use the U-Bahn to explore the city centre (note, the main city centre stop is actually called the Zoologischer Garten. The main bus station is also located here), then ask at the information kiosk in the bus station for the bus stop to catch a bus to Kladow. Here you can wander around the sleepy village, I can recommend any of the restaurants by the waterside. From here, you can jump on a ferry, which depart every 30 mins to one hour, and sail over to Potsdam in East Berlin and experience a completely different side of Berlin. From here, you can catch the U-bahn back to the main city centre, or stop off on the way to take in some of the many beautiful sights the city has to offer. Using the TAGESCARTE is an economical and exciting way to get around the city, giving you the freedom to go where and when you like.
