Advantages: Provides cheap car parking Disadvantages: Dirty and noisy
Living out side the city of Cambridge, parking is hard to find and expensive, therefore I tend to use the park and ride system when I visit. It is not ideal and is more expensive that other towns and cities, but you can park your car all day for nothing. The buses are old, dirty and noisy, but the drivers are usually friendly and will chat. The cost of a ride is around 1.20 pound per person for a return journey.
I would recommend ... ...does not provide free car parking, as the roads are crowded and the city council is shutting roads for public access on what seems to be a daily basis.
This system provides value for money but the you need to remember the buses number and find out from the driver where you can pick it up from. The buses tend to change route frequently as Cambridge continues to have alot of traffic calming programmes under way.

I think it is time for an update on Cambridge's park and ride facilities.
There are five Park & Ride sites in Cambridge which all operate Monday - Saturday. Cowley Road ;Madingley Road;Babraham Road ;Newmarket Road & Trumpington. The P&R is a great resource for locals and visitors alike.Parking in Cambridge is expensive at around £1.80 per hour.Anyone needing to stay in town for a length of time will end up owing an arm & a leg! If you are planning ... ...£2 per adult, but 3 children up to 16 go free so it's not a bad deal for a family outing.
Three of the sites, Trumpington, Madingley Road and Newmarket Road also operate on a Sunday between 9am - 6pm. If you are touring the area in a campervan ,I recommend Babraham Road and Trumpington sites,as larger spaces are provided..All the others have height barriers which prevent access for this type of vehicle.
Babraham Road is also the place to park if ...

Advantages: Park & Ride, cyclists paradise Disadvantages: Car's penalised with heavy parking costs and road restrcitions
.... and also one of the hardest ones to get to if you live in the outlying villages. Cambridge has a good rail station that is well linked to the main part of the city by regular cheap bus services or a 20 minute walk. If you really want to be with the in crowd though then Cambridge really is a city where the bicycle is king. Cambridge has plenty of places to park your bicycle scattered throughout the city, though this can sometimes still be a difficult ... ...overwhelm the parking stations and the only think more annoying than returning to find your seat nicked is returning to find that someone has fastened their bike nice and securely - to yours!!!
You don't see this often though and if you want to get around Cambridge quickly and easily bicycles really are the way to go. The buses in the city can be quite confusing as they have to serve so many outlying villages and get around restrictions and changes ...

Advantages: Variety of food, good prices, nice location Disadvantages: Chain-owned
The Cafe Rouge chain runs all around the country, with one in most towns. The Cambridge restaurant is in a scenic location, not far from the River Cam, on Bridge Street. The decor inside is nice, and there is normally a good atmosphere. The French-style cuisine is normally cooked to a high standard, and there is a fairly wide choice on the menu.
Whilst some of the dishes can be slightly more pricey, they are fairly in line with similar chain restaurants, such as Bella Italia etc (around the £8-£10 mark for main meals). They also now offer Prix Fixe menus, where you can get 2 courses for £8.95 or 3 courses for £10.95, between 12pm and 5pm. On top of this, Cafe Rouge are now offering a set meal for £10.95, which includes 2 courses and a drink. For those wanting to save even more, Tesco Clubcard points can be converted into vouchers to ...

, and you'll be able to pick up a return journey to the city fairly cheaply. Go to www.gobycoach.com for more details.
By Train: Trains run pretty regularly (from Kings Cross in London you'll find a train roughly every 15 minutes), but are slightly more expensive than travelling by coach.
By Car: Cambridge is just off the M11, useful if coming from the South. From the East, North, or North-West, use the A14. Whichever direction you are travelling from, Cambridge is very well signposted!
By Air: The nearest airport is Stansted - once you arrive, just hop on the M11 and you'll be there inaround 30 minutes.

The nice thing about Cambridge is that most of it is so close together - I personally travel everywhere on foot. However, you'll find that a bicycle is a very easy way ...
Advantages: Cheap, fast and good for you Disadvantages: Can be dangerous
Now, bear in mind that having had a bike for less than two weeks, I'm a bit of a novice at this cycling in London business. I lived inCambridge for three years where there's really no other sensible way of gettingaround, but hung up my helmet when I came to London due to a fear of London traffic. The only thing that got me over that was cycling in Java - if you can deal with Indonesian traffic, London traffic's a walkover.
Having said that, cycling in London is not for novices. London drivers are not patient folk and will cut you very little slack. Many are also not used to looking out for bikes and do daft things like pull out in front of you. And of course, cycling is, like everything else, something with inherent risks.
These, however, can be minimised. Getting a helmet and getting lights should be mandatory - you're daft to ...
