transport in Lisbon

Advantages: Very cheap
Disadvantages: the taxi ride back to the airport!

We visited Lisbon in June 2006. The metro is really easy to negotiate, just four lines (red, yellow, blue and green). We bought "day tickets" from the booth at our local station (as recommended by the hotel receptionist) for around 3 Eur for one days unlimited travel. The ticket was rechargable, so the next day we took the same ticket back and paid for our travel for the rest of our stay. We didn't realise however, until our last day, that ...

The metro stations were all very clean and modern.

We also took the main line train to the beach at Estoril. We bought our tickets at the machine and were amazed that it worked out the single fare as 1.50 Eur each! When the ticket collector came to inspect the tickets while we were on the train I was half expecting him to ask for more money, but no, that was the correct price. This was for a journey which took over half an ... more

Advantages: Easy to use underground: Helpful friendly people
Disadvantages: Hire a car in advance otherwise it is expensive

...except for the difficulty in getting accustomed to the left hand drive! We crossed the longest bridge in Europe which was spectacular but the road tolls are quite annoying (just because we weren't used to them I suppose). We took some taxis and the drivers were very friendly (just like London cabbies). They found it hilarious when I tried to speak in Portuguese. They drove a bit like maniacs but not unlike many city cab drivers. We took a ferry ...
...ferry but it did the trip and was very cheap. The buses were also cheap and the driver told us that our tickets would cover us on trams and buses for the day. Unfortunately we didn't get to take a tram. The one thing that struck me about Lisbon was the friendliness of the people. They didn't hold a grudge against me for the actions of my fellow Englanders during the European Cup, which they could have easily done. They went out of their way to ...

Lisbon - vibrant and relaxing

Advantages: Pretty easy to get to from UK
Disadvantages: Lots to see not enough time!

Lisboa, as the locals call their city ? Lisbon to us British types ? was my latest holiday destination. Literally just returned at the time of writing (well 22 hours ago). We were looking for somewhere no too far away, warmer than the UK and reasonably priced. A friend had told me that Portugal was pretty inexpensive in terms of a holiday location. So, given that I plan to visit all European capital cities, I figured I?d add Lisbon to my list of those visited. Lisbon is situated on the banks of the River Tagus to the southern end of Portugal.. It?s also the capital city of Portugal ? which I?m pretty sure the majority of readers already knew! Getting there We flew from Edinburgh to Heathrow, then onwards to Lisbon. The journey took around 5 hours and included 1 and a half hours between flights in Heathrow. We flew ...

Lisbon - Capital City On A Human Scale

Advantages: Plenty to see, good food, the trams, nice people
Disadvantages: Can't think of any, unless you count having a really odd-sounding language!

-enabled PC and printer for 3?/15 minutes. We only drank once in the smart tranquil bar of the Restaurant Blú at mezzanine level, which seems like as good a way of getting a tray full of peanuts without cracking open the mini-bar as any! Of course, you had to buy a drink??.yeah, yeah, I know - ?it?s a dirty job etc.? Overall, it was about 100? /night for two, which for a smart hotel in a good location in a European capital city is pretty good. This may not be their standard room rate, but my wife negotiated a good advance booking deal off the internet. We also pre-booked a superb restaurant called Olivier in the Bairro Alto (High Quarter), but more of the nosebag later. GETTING AROUND LISBON As well as the predictable buses and taxis, Lisbon has a metro of four separate lines (Linha Azul, Amarela, Verde and Vermelha ? Blue, Yellow ...
