Saver Tickets: A book of six Saver bus tickets costs £3.90 (65p per single ticket). They can be used on all London buses including Night buses and do not have expiry date; just detach half of the ticket and hand it to the bus driver or conductor.
These Passes and Saver tickets can be purchased from newsagents in London displaying the sign ‘Buy Your Travelcards & Bus Passes Here’ or from London Travel Information Centres (e.g., in Victoria Station). London Underground stations also sell Bus Passes.
If you have missed the last bus and the Tube stations are closed after midnight, the only mean of affordable public transport is Night bus. They are just normal buses run on major bus routes from midnight to 7am and have an N-prefixed route number. The fare is £1.50 for central London, £1 for outer London only. A Travelcard purchased on the previous day can now be used on Night buses up to 4.30am.
Remember to pick up a useful leaflet ‘Travelling in London’ from Tube stations. It includes a central London map showing the major bus routes and main tourist attractions. It also has a list of London Travel Information Centres. More detailed bus maps ‘Central London Bus Guide’ and ‘Night Bus Guide’ can be obtained from the centres. You can also call the 24 hour helpline ‘London Travel Information’ for information and advice: 020 7222 1234 (Outside UK: 44 20 7222 1234).
NB Certain special bus services do not accept Travelcards, Bus Passes or Saver tickets.
...red buses in London are getting a little rusty and we don’t see too many new buses around but I have to say still they are one of the best means of transport in London. I have been using them for many years now. Although now a days I don’t use them very often as compared to my college days but still there are times when I prefer taking a bus rather than using my car as finding a place to park the car can be very difficult at times and ... ...up to £4 per hour for parking. With the passage of time I have seen so many changes, some good and some bad. While the service has become worse in some aspects, There have been some new developments proven to be very useful.
I’ll divide my op in three sections, the Good, the Bad and the Fares.
GOOD

Ø They are cheaper than tubes.
Ø They are available nearly 22 hours a day as compared to the underground service, which ceases after midnight.

Advantages: superb value for money, great guides, ticket lasts 24 hours Disadvantages: absolutely none
Two weeks ago I found myself at a very boring conference in London. Having spent an almost sleepless night in a main-road hotel above a train station, I was in danger of dozing off. Outside, however, the skies were clear and blue and the temperatures unseasonably warm. I waited ‘til twelve, took advantage of the free lunch and then legged it to Trafalgar Square to take an open top bus tour round the capital for the rest of the afternoon.
The ... ...I would have got on it whatever the price and wherever it was going in truth, but I was very pleased to discover that for £15 quid I was entitled to 3 bus tours and 1 boat ride up the Thames as many times as I wanted over the next 24 hours. Also, I could get on and off the buses at the many designated stops whenever I liked.
Fantastic. I whipped out my cash and took my place on the ‘red’ tour which was to last one and a half to two hours ...

Advantages: Cheap as chips, improving by the day Disadvantages: Traffic, difficult if you are not a londoner
Just looked through the old london bus reviews, and its amazing how things have moved on. Within the past few years, london's buses have been completely transformed, and many londoners now prefer them to the tube.
CHARGES / TICKETS
Bus pricing was always v. complex, and Im sure it put people off. A simplified sturcture was put in place, and it now operates on a flat fare basis. A shame if you are only going a few stops, but usually works out a ... ...you use a pre-paid oystercard. This covers almost all routes (except special services, eg to Heathrow). These are cheap, but were even cheaper before this year. You can also buy day tickets for £3 and weekly tickets for £10. The complex zone system has gone. These prices are very favourable, compared to other UK cities. Note - if you are in central london, you MUST buy a ticket beofre boarding the bus. They will NOT let you buy one once you are on ...

Advantages: Cheap and reasonably convenient Disadvantages: Can be dirty and uninviting
...gave a good account of getting around London by bus but what about the
man/women sitting in the front seat?
I have sat in that seat for a good many years and in different parts of the country. In
the 1960s it used to be fun. Lots of good mates and lots of cheerful passengers. Ever
been on a 05.00 bus travelling towards the City area of London. It used to be packed
with char ladies who were the chirpiest lot of people you would ever come across.
... ...driver off the bus is getting later
and later but that does not concern you does it.
Bus lanes are a great idea so long as they are located sensibly and that the local
authorities enforce them. Motorists hate them because they have a built in resistance to
allowing a bus to pass. It must be stopped. One trick of motorists is to just allow their
car wheels to enroach into the bus lane enough to stop the bus for a minute or so. That
makes them ...

...you run the risk of getting caught in peak hour traffic. They provide a popular way of getting around and about London and will enable you on most routes to at least catch a glimpse of one or two tourist attractions enroute. The fares are reasonable , certainly compared to the tube and providing you can get a seat all you have to do is watch the world through the window and hope that you remember not to get carried away and get of at the right stop. ...

Advantages: Environmentally-friendly way to get around. Cheap, avoid the traffic. Free Metro newspaper. Disadvantages: Crowded!
London. What's the point in that? Why not just get a travel card from wherever outside London?
Another alternative to gettingaroundLondon is black cab. Well a cab will take you from A to B for a fortune and probably get stuck in traffic making the fare even hirer! But one thing you will be guaranteed is a friendly cabbie! With my parents we've got London cabs a few times and every time we've had a friendly and chatty driver.
The final alternative - buses. Well if you get a travel card it includes unlimited travel on London buses as well as on the tube so its worth using. Buses often get stuck in traffic but you'll getaround quicker bybus than by car because of London's bus lanes.
The Tube ~~
Despite all the criticism the tube gets it is actually very good. Its really old and is still one of the best if not the best undergrounds ...
Advantages: Comfortable and friendly Disadvantages: Off the main roads so easily missed
Last year during a two day walkout by the majority of London's tube drivers, the city's roads were plunged into more chaos than usual. We were taking a midweek break inLondon which could not be re-arranged but thought that we would probably manage to getaround pretty well on foot and bybus.
However whilst trying to reach a restaurant we'd reserved a table at, we realised we had lost our way and decided to dive into a nearby pub, take a deep breath, have a drink and phone the restaurant for further directions. The pub was the Wellesley Arms in Chelsea.
Situated in one of the city's more affluent areas, the Wellesley Arms is a traditional London pub which I was told had recently been refurbished. It has the traditional London frontage - built into a terrace of rather nice Georgian Houses and has a wide band of foliage trailing ...
Advantages: Plenty to do, historic, fun, scenic, friendly, easy to get to Disadvantages: Can be cold
& from Aberdeen. The bus station is next to the train station & it too has recently been renovated.
FERRY: There is a direct link daily to the Orkney & Shetland Islands; the ferry port is walking distance form the bus & train station.
ROAD: If you intend to drive to Aberdeen there are dual carriage ways all the way from the south into Aberdeen. From the north (Inverness road) it's a mixture of dual carriage ways & normal 'A' roads. From the west (most scenic) it's all 'A' roads, as is the north east link to Peterhead & Fraserburgh.
From Manchester road travel is 355 miles, from York 350 miles, Newcastle 250 miles, Birmingham 428 miles & London 544 miles.
