Myself and my family left London for a safer and less congested life in Milton Keynes 5 years ago now and I must say it has been the best move I have ever made but if there is a down side to Milton Keynes I would have to say that it is the transport system.
Below I will detail the different mode's of travel and the pluses and minuses of each and let you make your own mind up about the ease of traveling around Milton Keynes.

WALKING + CYCLING

I will start with the good old fashioned traveling method that will always exist and that is the reliable feet. If you plan on walking around Milton Keynes ensure that you are wearing hiking boot's as you may find that you get through 20 pair's of shoe's a year in Milton Keynes. Milton Keynes has what is known as Red Routes these are a series of connecting path's that take you by foot or bicycle all around Milton Keynes from village to village. Be warned there are over 250 kilometers of Red Routes so plenty of exercise for walkers.

Positives
1. Link's nearly all villages in Milton Keynes.
2. Takes you past and through some beautiful scenery and villages.
3. Great exercise as there is a lot to cover.
4. Great for cyclist's as no traffic.
5. Well lit at night.
6. Very well signposted
Negative's
1. Hidden and very quiet unfortunately ideal for mugging's and rape's. (Happening more increasingly)
2. Take's you the longest route possible.
3. Can get lost very easily without a Red Route Map available at many newsagents.
4. Not somewhere to be at night.
5. Beware Cyclist's or vice versa if your a cyclist.

CAR

Milton Keynes is a pleasure to drive around very quiet and easy to understand road system once you are used to it. You have a grid system as in America where all road's meet at Horizontal and Vertical point's at Roundabout's which as most people know Milton Keynes is famous for. The road's are usually very clear except rush hour but still nowhere near the congestion of most Town's. You also have little side turning's off each H or V road into various estates making it quiet easy to locate your destination and keep's busy traffic off of pedestrian roads.

Positives

1. Clear Roads for easy and stress free driving.
2. Easy to find your way around once you understand grid system.
3. Easy to correct a mistake should you take a wrong turn.
4. No real driving through busy built up areas.
5. No stop start driving saving on petrol, time and the environment.

Negatives

1. Many people have trouble getting to grips with roundabouts and grid system.
2. Lot's of pedestrian deaths as people try crossing busy fast roads instead of using longer routed Red Way system.
3. City Centre can be very busy especially at the weekends.

BUSES

The bus services in Milton Keynes are extensive and you can get to the centre of town by bus from nearly any village in Milton Keynes except the extremely remote ones. Nearly all buses terminate or go to the shopping centre but because of a limited number of route's the journey that is 10 minute's in a car can be 1 hour on a bus.

Positives

1. Cheap a daily pass is only £1.50 and covers all Milton Keynes
a £10 pass will see you through the whole week.
2. Reasonably regular and cover an extensive area of Milton Keynes.
3. Never really busy exception is the weekend.
4. All get you to shopping centers.
5. Reduces traffic and pollution.
6. Modern and very clean.

Negatives

1. Take the longest possible route so allow plenty of time.
2. Not enough people use them me included.

TRAINS

The train service in Milton Keynes is great for traveling out of Milton Keynes but not any good really for traveling around the City. With direct link's to towns north of Milton Keynes and ample service's into London it make Milton Keynes a great place for people wanting to live in the country but work in the city.

Positives

1. Great For commuting into major Town's especially London and Birmingham.
2. Good choice of companies with lovely station.
3. Easily accessible station by bus and road from most of Milton Keynes.

Negatives

1. Very expensive
2. Limited service within Milton Keynes
3. Bad service on weekends constant rail works for years.
4. Regular delay's mainly due to over running rail works.

CANAL

There is a lovely Grand Union Canal that run's through most of Milton Keynes however this is more for pleasure boat's can be hired from many place's and the canal run's from London in the south to way up north. There are a few places to stop in Milton Keynes for great food and pub's and some lovely scenic view's from the canal.

Positives

1. Very beautiful scenery in places.
2. Pleasurable way to travel but not practical for commuting loll.
3. Environmentally friendly travel.
4. Lot's of places to stop and lunch.
5. Can travel a long way by boat so suitable to start a holiday from Milton Keynes.

Negatives

1. No good for commuting.
2. No good for stopping by shops lol.
3. Very expensive to hire (but worth it)

CAB

There are numerous Cab firms in Milton Keynes but minimum fare seems to be about £3 and what I would call a relatively short journey costs a fortune. Problem is the roads are very quick to travel due to lack of congestion so the mile's clock up very quickly making you feel as if you have only been in the cab for 5 minutes and got a bill for £15.

Positives

1. Most firms are regulated and professional
2. Very quick to arrive and reliable
3. Plenty to choose from
4. Always waiting at Station

Negatives

1. Very expensive considering journey time's are very short.
2. More and more illegal cab's are appearing.
3. Cab's at Station seem to charge almost double (book one before you arrive much cheaper)

HELICOPTER (ONE FOR THE RICH)

For those who have the money to spare lol we have our very own Heli Pad located near the Milton Keynes Bowl so just get your pilot to drop you off and have your Limo waiting I use this service 3 time's a week but don't tell anyone lol.

I think I have covered all the available mode's of transport in Milton Keynes and the pro's and con's of each overall Milton Keynes is not a bad place for traveling once you have been here a few time's and it has a rather unfair reputation then again for visitor's as apposed to resident's I suppose the roundabout's may well leave you disorientated lol.

Hope this has been informative and covered all aspects of travel around Milton Keynes.
