ok, so everyone is telling you just how much safer new yourk is today - but htings are relative! This is a major urban centre, and there are times when you must take care - going on the subway is one such time of course. There are a few tips for you to follow. Firstly, you can get a day pass instead of paying for each trip - tourist passes are convenient as they allow bus and subway to be used unlimited together - so they are a bargain.
In manhatten, ... ...or on the wrong train if not careful. Take, for example, the "A Train" - we wanted to travel on this from times square southwards to the airport - but they don't tell you there are 2 "A train" routes! of course, we had got the wrong one!
Likewise, when on the platforms, take special care that you are going the right way - you might be on the righttrain but heading in the wrong direction. An easy mistake when in a foreign city - and can take you ...

hiring a cab in new york for the first time can be a scary prospect - but take heart from my experience, and I hope that my tips will also help to save you any of the agonies and pitfalls that await the new traveller to this vibrant city in USA. Yellow cabs are just so efficient - they swarm like bees around the streets, but of course...just liek anywhere else, sods law tells you they are always full when you want one!
Taxis are much cleaner than ... ...staff!!
As a result, go and stand on the edge of the kerb - or even just into the road - and stick your hand confidently in the air and keep it there until a taxi arrives.
It is customary to tip, of course, and although brits are not used to this at home I implore you not to forget to tip - my way of looking at it is that if the taxi driver is polite and gets you to your destination dry and safe then that alone makes tipping worthwhile!!
Oh one ...

Advantages: Convenient, reasonably cheap, an experience ! Disadvantages: A wild scary take-your-life-in-your-hands adventure !
New Yorks cabbies appear to be a law unto themselves !! They are reasonably cheap and certainly plentiful, but like New Yorkers in general they are for the most part pretty rude and their driving can leave you gasping for air !! In their defence the traffic in New York is unbelievable and they have a nightmare of a job but pedestrians had better beware because they don't take any prisoners !! We took the subway one day which is much cheaper and far ...

Advantages: Fixed rate with a friendly driver Disadvantages: Some drivers do not speck english and have a lack of street knowledge
Earlier this year I visited New York with my husband. We opted not to book transfers from JFK Airport, instead we thought we would take a New York cab. What an experience!
I was a little concerned as we were in a strange country and a little jet lagged, but my fears were soon put aside. We had been warned away from taxis by our tour operator. Our driver was a breath of fresh air. He was friendly and pointed out the sites as were drove into Manhatten. ... ...was but because they do not have to undergo any formal tests his knowledge of many of the street names were lacking. I did feel safe in his well maintained car.
The best thing about this ride was the fee. To prevent tourists being ripped off there is a fixed fee form JFK to the city and that is $30.00 plus tip. It is cheaper than being on a meter and introduces you to the American currency at the same time. (The fixed rate may have increased but ...

Advantages: Fast, efficient. Disadvantages: Can be confusing
They had to build an entire city in blocks before they realised how appalling this was for channelling traffic - you reach a set of traffic lights every minute - and the subway avoids the horror that this provides on the roads. Quick and cheap - with a uniform fair; you can buy subway tokens, used to get on and ride just about anywhere - except the very furthest reaches off Manhatten. Care must be taken, however: very confusingly the stations are ...

...not to scream out loud with wonder.
The only thing I don't like about New York is leaving, which unfortunately I have to do to recover from my insanity of dreaming.
Worthwhile seeing are the newly regenerated Harlem and meat packing districts. These are both very interesting in terms of shopping, eating out, and also provide some of the best value hotels in New York all for around $50 per night. When I say best value I mean groovy, not your thrown together glass and steel affairs but character buildings with a cultural touch of flair. You can get guided tours but that's not my kind of ting, and since you are working to a grid system -gettingaround is pretty easy with a decent guide, rough guide for instance. When it comes to gettingaround in New York I would suggest the subway by day and yellow cabs by night, although to be perfectly honest...

Advantages: Great places to See! Disadvantages: Run out of time!
...; where a breakfast consisting of the equivalent of a good old fashioned English fry up cost around $6 and a substantial feed it was too with eggs, bacon, sausages, beans, pancakes and of course toast, a cup of coffee cost around $1.50 with unlimited refills, a real bargain. Of course there were lots of other choices on the menu, whether you just wanted pancakes with maple syrup, waffles or even cereal, it was all there and the service was fabulous, the waiting staff were very friendly too.

Advantages: Tips on getting tickets. Wonderful city, full of life...AND THEATRES Disadvantages: Can be VERY busy, as well as pricey!!
...up, basis. The first time I went to NEWYORK, AIDA (Disney's other show that never made it to film, Elton John did the music and it is tip top!) had just opened and they were doing this. So, me and my friends queued up at 5'o'clock in the morning (Yes, I was insane)...and there was already a queue (Yes, New York is insane too). It just goes to show how 'crazy' some people can be about seeing a show.
Some shows also offer a 'lottery' on the first 2 rows too. This usually involves turning up at the theatre 2 hours before a show starts, putting your name in a hat. If your name gets drawn (1/2 hour later) you can buy 2 seats for the first 2 rows for something like $25 each (bargain). This is better for all those people who can't be bothered to queue up at crazy morning times, but this does however involve some hanging around until...

The New Yorker is in an excellent midtown location with the subway (lines A, C & E) literally steps outside. Being on the corner of 8th Avenue and 34th Street this meant good access to Macy's, Empire State Building, Madison Square Gardens and the... more
Postmodernism, eh? It's a funny old bag of fish. Even the holier-than-thou critics don't quite seem to know what it's all about. They argue whether it's
a) a revolt against modernism,
b) a progression of modernism,
c) both of these and more
or d) more
If you want to stay in Central New York then this is the hotel to book. It is actually IN Times Square! It's a huge modern hotel with over 45 floors so some of the views are great. There is a bar at the top which is a lovely place to have a drink,... more
