If your going to San Francisco

Advantages: A Great city full of life and fun
Disadvantages: Expensive

...you want to go.
Getting around the city is best done n either a Tram or trolley bus.
The trams cost 2 dollars a ride but you can get a day pass for about 6 dollars. Unlimited use for the day and you get to see a lot of the city. Expect to be a bit crowded. Walking is an option from Union Square but its very hilly so expect to get tired.
Taxis are expensive and slow in the traffic.

Eating Out.
-----------
.../> Chinatown offers some of the best food around and at a good price. There is lots of it too.
The Italian cafes are very nice to eat in. If you would like to sit outside though, you must book in advance. Tables inside are freely available.
Around the Square there are many nice Steak Houses and burger bars. Some cheap, others not so. Shop around. Lori's Diner can come highly recommended.
Planet Hollywood is also nice to eat ... more

Every metro area needs a system like this

Advantages: Fast, reasonably priced, great way to see the Bay Area,
Disadvantages: It's public transportation

...system is well-organized, and makes getting around the Bay Area a snap. Fares are reasonable (figure $5-$6 per person from SF to the East Bay and back), considering the luxury of being able to jet through Bay Area traffic. On average, trains run every 10-15 minutes (more often during peak times) and cover the main areas of the Bay. Trains are generally pretty clean and the people that ride are pretty pleasant. Taking BART is also a great way to ...
...for $3.75 (I think) as long as you get on and off at the same station. All the tracks (with the exception of SF and downtown Oakland) are above ground, and on a nice sunny day, it's a great way to see the diverse environment that is the San Francisco Bay Area. Overall, BART is one of those things that makes the Bay Area special and really makes it easy to get around. You can go to a concert, baseball game, football game, or basketball game via the ...

Cable cars

Advantages: Cheap and easy to get around onq
Disadvantages: Sometimes crowded

I think that anyone taking a trip to San Francsico should make it their duty to ride on the cable cars. These are something very unique to San Francisco (although they are in other US cities too)and help to characterise it. They are a way of travelling and seeing the sights, (you wouldn't want to walk up some of those hills hehe) as well as being able to say that you have taken a ride on a true 'Cisco vehicle! They are safe, fun and enjoyable. I ...

Ease of getting around

Do the locals use this?

Advantages: Scenic, unique, hop-on, hop-off
Disadvantages: V limited coverage, noisy, one-hit wonder

Like many things San Francisco, the cable cars seem to be a relic of a bygone age existing to please the tourists. The cable cars have very limited coverage (i think there are less than ten routes) and in summer are rammed to bursting with other tourists. In terms of value for money - it all depends on the kind of trip you are on. Its not as cheap as normal public transport. Daytrippers probably should go for a ride as the main sights can be caught ...

Bart. Great system. Wish london had something this handy

Advantages: Goes quite far out of SF, fast, cheap, scenic
Disadvantages: Limited coverage inside city limits

If you're in San Francisco and you want to get around using means other than a car, then the BART is ok. Its really most useful if you intend to travel beyond the main city Inside the city the Bart has a limited number of stops and serves a rather limited geographical area. You can basically get up and down Market St and get around the Mission district. Outside the city center you can get as far afield as Fremont, Oakland and Richmond. Not sure ...

Ease of getting around

Nice addition to the mix

Advantages: Historical, cheap, great way to travel between neighborhoods.
Disadvantages: None!

Having lived in San Francisco for the past 4 years as an undergrad college student, I have had the privilege of riding every kind of public transportation the city has to offer. The San Francisco Streetcars are (in my opinion) one of those things that the locals know about and the tourists don't quite know how to classify or see why they're there. From a functionality angle, the SF Streetcars are pretty simple...they're electric cars that travel ...

It's really a great way to make your way between the two neighborhoods while enjoying some history at the same time. They're kind of like busses, except for the historical aspect. The City has been purchasing streetcars from other cities, resoring them, and putting them into service along Market Street. There are several cities ...

Advantages: A lively and exciting city
Disadvantages: Thieves all over the place

. Arty's guesthouse is nice and quiet - despite being on a really busy main road - and attracts the sort of travellers who don't want to go out and get pissed every night (there's a curfew of around 11:30/12pm). It's in a great position, halfway between the main bus terminal and the plaza San Francisco, about a 10 minute walk from each. The rooms are simple but nice and clean, and the beds are comfy. There are hot communal showers and clean communal toilets. There's a kitchen, a lounge with squashy chairs and a massive TV plus DVD selection, board games, internet, a pool room and a little shop. Big fluffy towels are provided. And perhaps most importantly, the English-speaking owners are really lovely and friendly and helpful. It's 60 bs a night per person ($8, £4), which is not perhaps the cheapest of places to stay, but for what you get ...
