Founded by the millionaire John Paul Getty in 1953 on a small ranch in his home of Malibu has grown into a huge collection of museums and collections. The original museum displaying roman and greek works of art proved so popular that the Getty Centre in the Santa Monica mountains now occupies a site over a 100 acres in size.
The Getty Centre took 14 years to build and a plaque in the entrance hall claims that it cost 1 billion dollars to complete! With the huge cost of maintaining and building the Getty Centre you would think that admission price would be high to reflect this. However, admission is free and the Getty Centre continues to uphold the wishes of John Paul Getty that art should be free to anyone to enjoy.
The Getty Centre is situated in the Santa Monica mountains and you have one of the best views of LA from here. In addition to the city you get a fine view of the Pacific and the San Gabriel mountains. The Getty Centre can be reached by either bus or the new underground system. However, it is probably best to drive there as is always the case in LA. Parking costs $5 for the day and is well worth it. The Getty Centre is just off the San Diego freeway and clearly signposted.
The museum has a huge range of collections from pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts, to 19th- and 20th-century American and European photographs. There are also exhibits of Roman and Greek sculpture, Native American artifacts, furniture throughout the ages and cultural items from most countries in the world. It is quite difficult to convey the extent of the collection in the Getty Centre, but there will be something for everyone. The Getty Centre is not called the cultural heart of LA for no reason.
Even if you aren't interested in the collections within the Getty Centre is an architectural masterpiece. Richard Meier, the architect who designed the Getty Centre used innovative designs to give it a truly remarkable appearance. 1 million tons of marble was used to construct the Getty Centre. Equal work has gone into creating the gardens, which appear to have been modeled on Versailles and are extremely pleasant to walk through if you grow tired of looking at the cultural masterpieces within.
There are several cafes and restaurants to eat at, all of which are moderatley priced. The best in my opinion is the Garden View Cafe which offers a spectacular view of LA and the Pacific. All cafes and restaurnats are open between 11.30 and 5.30. There are several different tours to go on throughout the Getty Centre, one of which focuses primarily on the architecture of the building, another focuses on the changing exhibits. All tours are approximately an hour long and leave every hour from the entrnace hall between 11 and 4.
The Getty Centre is closed on Monday and open everyday Tuesday to Sunday except Christmas Day and New Years Day. The Getty Centre is open between 10 and 6 Tuesday to Sunday and stays open until 9 on Saturday evening. This is one of the gems of LA and is great for those who are interested in culture or not. The view itself is worth the trip.
Advantages: Modern Architecture & Spectacular View Disadvantages: Traffic Jam
are too modern. It is ideal for showing contemporary art pieces. As for the roman sculptures and antique furniture, they seem to go better with the Malibu Getty. After all, I still love the Malibu Getty Museum better! Wish it will reopen soon!
Check with the condition of the 10 & 405 freeway before you leave. because both are very congested freeway.
Please give me a rating if you found my experience is useful for your information! Because I need your support to continue the writing career. Many many thanks! ^!^ ...

the GettyCenter which has an enormous art collection; go on a weekday to avoid the traffic. Of course there are the amusement parks like Disneyland and Knott?s Berry Farm.
The Food
Food in California is outstanding. Whether you are a vegetarian or confirmed carnivore most restaurants will be able to satisfy your needs. Californians place a huge emphasis on fresh food since agriculture is second only to entertainment as California?s biggest industry. Never be afraid to ask for items to be cooked the way that you want it and most restaurants have special ?off menu? items that those in the know can ask for.
I have found a wide variety of restaurants on Sunset Strip. Most of the restaurants have outdoor dining so that you can watch all the ?pretty people? walk on by. I have had everything from Steak Tartare, to sushi, to homemade ...
