boarder between the 11th and 15th century. Thanks to the ancient pier, Ghent River Hotel is the only hotel that can be reached by boat. The site encompasses 2 buildings: a renaissance house, dated 1518 and a rice-mill built on a burnt down sugar refinery, dated 1857. The building also served as a cotton spinning-mill (1873), a warehouse (1879) and a steam actuated bakery (1892). The latter expanded several times until 1909. In front of the hotel you come across a small square which is served as thread (yarn) market in the Middle Ages and the 19th century. Next to the hotel we meet one of the typical medieval ?waterstraatjes?. After a few minutes walk, you meet the ?vrijdagsmarkt? with the statue of Jacob van Artevelde.

...is Flemish, but you will hear French too and English is very widely spoken (occasionally you will hear German as well). The city is a great base for visiting the other Belgium tourist spots of Bruges, Brussels and Antwerp because none are more than an hour away by car ~ and the train network covers them all too!
Ghent used to be one of the largest cities in Europe and was famous for its cloth. It is still a popular place for visitors, but isn’t as busy as Bruges or Brussels, while still having all the features that make it an ideal place for a day trip. The city is located where the rivers Lys and Scheldt meet and is packed full of history.

Advantages: Sweet Belgian city with some interesting unique things to see Disadvantages: Not booming out of season
.... The gift shop at the back has an excellent selection of post cards, and various religious souvenirs.

Opposite the cathedral is one of the only tourist shops in Ghent, but luckily it's a very nice one with a good range of cheap goods and friendly, English speaking staff. Down past there is the McDonalds (home to new-to-you McFlurrys and dodgy toilet attendants) and if you're walking round the city that's the point where you should turn right and walk past the post office, parallel to the river bank.
The river which runs alongside a large part of the City, and is home to one of the most picturesque streets in Ghent which is saying...

Advantages: beautiful, not too far Disadvantages: Too much beer to drink in one weekend
..., watch the cost if you fancy a seafood platter (can be up to £50 per person !!!). Beer is plentiful and varied - if you can't manage dessert, try a Framboise or Kriek (raspberry or cherry) beer - very filling and sweet. Waffles are yummy as is the chocolate (buy as much as you can eat & carry!)
If you have 3 days, take a guided coach tour to Ghent & Bruges. Both beautiful cities & the scenery on the way is well worth the trip. There is a brewery in Bruges to view & sample the booze. It's also well worth doing the river cruise - takes about 40 mins & is very pretty.
Would I go back - hell yes...
