It is now in its third generation of the Gilbert family and has gained a great reputation for reliability, its clean and modern cars and the smart and courteous drivers.
Gilberts of Chesham is an Amersham and Chesham (Buckinghamshire) based company and boasts the largest taxi company in the area. Like most taxi services, Gilberts are open seven days a week and offer the highest service whether you want a five minute journey or pick up from a London airport.
All drivers are thoroughly checked by Thames Valley Police and licenced by the local council and all drivers carry ID which is great when picking up someone from their front door (especially the older generation).
Gilberts offer a wide range of different cars to suit everyone’s needs and specifications from four seater salon cars to estate cars for the entire extra holiday luggage to six seater people carriers. What ever specification you need, Gilberts will always do their best to provide you with the most suitable car – all you need do is ask!
BOOKING
Booking with Gilberts is very easy and the friendly polite service makes the whole process even easier.
The usual way of booking which has been around for years is via phone (number can be seen below). When ringing up to book a taxi I found them very polite and helpful and they even offer door to door service, ie: they can come and knock at your door to let you know they are there, if needed help you in and out of the car, and also offer a phone call service to let you know they are on their way. I have got Gilberts Taxies many times and usually they are able to pick up within five to ten minutes if needed straight away which is great service.
The newer way of booking is via an online booking form which can be found at their website (see below for address).
The form to book online is simple to use and goes straight through to their office. It is checked twice daily and they recommend that if booking through this way you allow them 24 hours notice otherwise it is best to book over the phone. It is not advisable to book online for a taxi you need straight away.
The form itself is as I said above very simple and easy to understand offering fill in the blank and drop down menu options to let them know your name and address for drop off and pick up, any flight information if needed for airport pickup and how many passengers etc.
TRAVEL TEST
I have used Gilberts many times and will always go back to them for their great and reliable service. On ringing up the office to book a taxi, I have always been greeted by a polite person who is keen to help and will go out of their way to give you their best service. On booking for a taxi straight away, 90 percent of the time they are at your location within five minutes with a courtesy phone call to say they are outside. They are also very patient if you take a while to say goodbye to those you are with (which I do!) before getting into the taxi. I have also got into a taxi from a taxi rank and both times the driver will often get out of the car to help you in with any shopping or luggage.
The cars have always been squeaky clean and tidy which shows they make a real effort to give their best to their passengers.
Most of the drivers will chat with you though there are obviously some who are shyer and only enter conversation when you start it. All are smart dressed and polite, though, and drive in a generally good way opposed to many taxi companies I have used who seem to think that driving a taxi is like being on a race course! Even though they are careful drivers, they are not by any means slow and will always get you to your destination on time as long as traffic allows.
When reaching your destination the drivers will always help you to your door if needed which is great if you have loads of shopping or holiday luggage which we have had once or twice so no need to struggle in on your own. The only thing they don’t do is come in and make you a cup of tea!
From booking for an airport pickup we were also very happy with the service. We booked a couple of weeks in advance and were assured that the office checks flights of customers all the time to ensure they are there when your plane gets there, and we all know planes are often delayed as ours was – for two hours! After our long fight we were very tired so really glad when we saw our taxi and driver waiting with smiles to help us with our luggage with no waiting around. When getting in the taxi the driver pleasantly asked us about our holiday which was lovely.
So to conclude on the actual test of the taxi’s, I can honestly say that both drivers and cars are great, pick up and drop offs are reliable and fast (and not forgetting safe) and the whole process from booking to reaching the destination is stress free and pleasant.
TECHNOLOGY
Possibly an aspect that many don’t really think of though I thought I would mention as it aids in the reliability of Gilberts Services.
Gilberts always have the latest booking and dispatch systems and full GPS satellite navigation so they monitor all vehicles in their company providing extra safety for customers which gives us piece of mind. If a newer piece of technology comes out they endeavor to get it if it will help make customers experiences better. Gilberts also offer a I.V.R system, Interactive Voice Response to save time talking to an actual operator.
GILBERTS PARCELS
Gilberts Taxi company has also expanded to a parcel delivery service in 1987 for long and short distance deliveries. This service is also run by the third generation of Gilbert family and offer the same high standards as the taxi company.
