Seville is the capital of Andalucia in southern Spain. It has many places of interest to see but a big attraction is the Cathedral with the Giralda attached to it.
The Giralda was originally the minaret (where the call to prayer is made) of the mosque where the Cathedral now stands. It was constructed by the Muslims between 1184 and 1197. It has simple yet beautiful designs on all four sides making it an amazing site.
After the reconquest in 1568 the Christians fitted the minaret with the bell tower which some say spoil the harmony of the Giralda. The Giralda is the only original part left of the mosque and is beautifully made and preserved.
You can go up the Giralda for some amazing views of the Cathedral and also Seville. To go up the Giralda you will need to enter through the Cathedral. Entrance to the Cathedral on a Sunday is Free and entrance Mon - Sat is EUR7 (about £4.50). Entrance times do vary as the Cathedral is in use, so better to check in advance.
Going up the Giralda has been made easier as there are ramps all the way up - this was to allow passage for mounted guards. As you go up you can peer through the windows for some great views of the Cathedral's buttresses.
Once you reach the top you will have four great views of Seville and the Cathedral.
Having just read the criteria below I should add a bit more info: - I think this place is definately worth visiting if only for the views! - We arrived by car so I cannot comment on the transport links but you can easily get a taxi there. - Is it family friendly? Well young kids wont appreciate the view but should find the climb up fun! With the ramps, there is easy access for push chairs and wheel chairs. It is fairly easy going up and you can take a break at the windows. - Going up and down will take about 30 - 45 minutes.
Advantages: beautiful views, value for money, stunning architecture Disadvantages: none
The Giralda Tower is just part of the wonderful visit to the cathedral in Sevilla. From the outside the architecture is astounding and inside is much the same. The walk up to the top of the tower is fairly steep and narrow but on a slope. Although not the best for wheelchairs or pushchairs it is possible. At the top you are rewarded with beautiful views over Seville. A brilliant spot to take photos with viewing windows on all 4 sides. You can also ... ...every day - in fact those tall enough can probably touch them. Although not a huge fan of heights I felt fine at the top of this tower as it is an extremely solid construction. It is well worth the walk up (and down) and incoporated in your entrance fee to the cathedral it is good value too! ...
