The name Glasgow means dear green place and, as far as I'm concerned, it couldn't be more accurate.
I've lived in Glasgow most of my life, except for a 10 year period during which I worked in France, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and Tunisia so I know a good thing when I see it and Glasgow is definitely one of the nicest places to live in.
For a start it has more green area, i.e. parks, than any other city in Britain but ... ...friends over to stay in Glasgow and they are always amazed by that (and the free toilet facilities!).
It used to be quite expensive to get around Glasgow using public transport but now that First Bus have introduced an all day ticket, which costs as little as £1.80 at the weekend and can be used on any First Bus service, there is really no excuse for not getting out and about.

For a start it has more green area, i.e. parks, than any other city in Britain but for me one of the best things about it is that most of the museums and places of interest cost nothing to visit. I've had many foreign friends over to stay in Glasgow and they are always amazed by that (and the free toilet facilities!).

My favourite museum in Glasgow has always been the Art Gallery and Museum in the grounds of the Kelvin Grove Park in the west end of the city, but as time goes on I am starting to prefer the Museum of Modern Art in Queen Street, just off George Square in the city centre. Although they house completely different styles of art I prefer them because they have such a variety of artefacts, anything from prehistoric dinosaurs to kinetic sculptures and statues of Elvis Presley.
The Museum of Religious Art is also a must for visitors to Glasgow. It has a great selection of religious artefacts from all over the world but its most coveted item is the Christ of St John of the Cross painting by Salvador Dali. Right next door to this museum is the beautiful Glasgow Cathedral and directly across the road from there is the Provands Lordship which is reckoned to be one of the oldest houses in Glasgow.
Another favourite of mine is the People's Palace museum which is in the east end of the city beside the famous Glasgow Barras market. The People's Palace appeals to me so much because it is a museum that even people with no interest in art can enjoy because it concerns the way people lived in Glasgow from the medieval times through to modern day. The beautiful Botanic Gardens at the back of the museum are often used for weddings nowadays.
Although I'm not a big fan of Rennie Mackintosh he has designed many beautiful buildings in Glasgow. My favourite is the Scotland Street School, probably because every time I've been there hardly anybody else has been in the building. The classrooms remain just as they were when it was functioning as a school with all the old fashioned desks and blackboards.
A little known museum called the Tenement House, in Charing Cross at the edge of the city centre, is another favourite of mine. This is a house which, when it's owner passed away at the beginning of last century, was preserved exactly as she left it and is a typical example of a 'single end'of that era. You are escorted, by a tour guide, throughout the tiny apartment where you can see, amongst other things, the bed recess and the old range used for cooking meals and heating the house . It's like taking a step back in time.
As well as its many 'free entry' museums Glasgow also has a great variety of bars, nightclubs and restaurants (and, of course, the friendly people) making it one of the best places to come to for a city break, in my opinion!
Advantages: Lots to do, near magnificent countryside Disadvantages: It rains sometimes
...not too keen on cities, Glasgow is an exception because its friendly, has an wealth of history and plenty of interesting things going on all the time. Glasgwegians are a hardy bunch, but on the whole they are friendly, helpful and cheerful. Although its a comfortable city, it has a lot going for it for residents and visitors. Its surrounded by hills, to remind you that there is some magnificent countryside not too far away. It does not rain all the ... ...of things to do. Glasgow has many fascinating museums to explore. Try the Tenement House for a real sense of what life was like fifty or so years ago in Glasgow, or the Transport Museum for a fantastic collection of motor vehicles etc, and a genuine old street. Some of the best shopping in the UK is in Glasgow too. I love the Buchannan Galleries because its new and shiny but Argyle, Buchannan and Sauchiehall Street have loads of interesting shops ...

...time I had been to Glasgow was when we drove through it on the way to a wedding at Loch Lomond. I must say that on that drive we were not very impressed with Glasgow. But, on our recent mid-week break we found Glasgow to be a very interesting city with plenty to see and do. One of the things that sticks in our minds was just how many places there are to have a meal out in Glasgow city centre. It seems that you could not walk more than a few yards ... ...The newly opened Glasgow Science Centre (with the Glasgow Tower and Imax Cinema) is just across the river from the Exhibition Centre and there are plans to develop this area into a large cultural and leisure complex. The city has developed a very comprehensive public transport system, with a large rail network, the underground, buses and taxis. Altogether this makes Glasgow a very easy place to get around and the prices on all of these systems are ...

The architechture is Glasgow is some of the best in the country. Sometimes columns and arches would make you think you were is ancient Greece rather than "the Buckfast swilling capital of the world". Some of Britain's most renowned architechs such as Charles Rennie Macintosh and Alexander 'Greek' Thompson came from here.
You will also find a wealth of shops and boutiques that makes Glasgow one of Britain's biggest shopping districts outside ... ...facilities for eating and children. Glasgow Zoo is fairly downmarket, however nearby Edinburgh Zoo is a great place for children. New Lanark is a world heritage site which encapsules the best the West of Scotland had to offer during the Industrial Revolution, it has rides and museums.
All this is very good for the casual visitor, but if you are a sports fan then you must see one of the Old Firm teams in action. Both often have tickets available ...

Advantages: Beautiful in the sunshine Disadvantages: Horrible in the rain
...emotion on my part.*
Glasgow is notorious for its rainfall and believe you me, the stories you hear are not exaggerated. Fran Healy may have asked the question "Why does it always rain on me?" but even he must know that the answer is that it’s because he comes from Glasgow. This is obviously a great pity, because this city looks quite majestic in the sun.
I’ve seen the sun shine on the sandstone buildings, reflect on the office blocks ... ...there.
The reality for Glasgow for most of the year is somewhat bleaker, however. The European rain surplus is regularly dumped here (i.e. ever day). The city looks dull and drab. The university looks drab too and Mr. T-Rex wishes he was still extinct. The hustle and bustle around the city takes on a new edge as those on the paths have to jump and dodge the puddles. You’ll need to be wary of buses catching puddles in the road too, because ...

Advantages: Good shopping, nice people Disadvantages: It's a long way from Birmingham!
...recently had to go to Glasgow (from Birmingham) on business...and took my wife and 2 children with me so that could have a look around for a couple of days. I was unsure beforehand about what to expect. (We've all heard tales about the Scots hating the English and Glasgow being full of slums etc etc). Well I found the Glaswegians full of character and yes, very friendly. Okay, they say what they think but I like people who are upfront. Glasgow itself ... ...and has plenty of different shops (as well as the usual Next, Boots WH Smiths etc)There's a good public transport system, including an underground and whilst I saw little that was ultra-modern, the city had "Character"...something a lot of towns lost when they tore town the old buildings. So although my visit was out of necessity I would definitely go again...this time for pleasure! Advantages: Good shopping, nice people
Disadvantages: It's a long ...

Advantages: Local, dont need to fly from English airports. Good road connections Disadvantages: No direct rail link
Glasgow International Airport ( or Abbotsinch for those of us with longer memories ) is visible from the M8 motorway about 8 miles out of Glasgow and a mile or so from Paisley. So is very accessible to reach by car. It is my local airport and I have flown from here many a time on both international and domestic flights.
One thing to confirm, if you are using a low cost airline, is which Glasgow Airport you are going to. There is another - Glasgow Prestwick ( airport code PIK ) which is about 25 miles south of Glasgow. Ryanair fly to Prestwick not Glasgow.
There are 5 different parking areas from immediately opposite the terminal to approximately ¾ of a mile away. The bumf says it is served by a shuttle bus but as we all know, the regularity and frequency quoted in official leaflets can leave a lot to be desired. I haven’ ...
Advantages: Clean and Efficent Disadvantages: Busy at Peak Times
Glasgow International Airport is situated nine miles from Glasgow city centre and approximately fifty miles from Edinburgh. It is a very busy airport and serves the West of Scotland though with the range of flights available passengers travel from as far as Aberdeen .
How to get there.
By bus.
There is an excellent service which runs into Glasgow Buchanan Street frequently and also a service into Paisley Gilmour Street Railway Station.
By Car
It is served by a major road network which provides easy access to a wide variety of important Scottish locations. The airport is easily accessible by car off junction 28 of the M8 motorway.
Car Parking
You are guaranteed a space at a car park whose location and price structure have been matched to your length of stay. I believe there are currently 2,500 spaces . I have never used this ...
Advantages: Close to City Centre Disadvantages: Can take ages into the city centre
Glasgow is Scotland's busiest airport and at times it seems like it can't cope or perhaps doesn't appear interested in coping. There are a good number of destinations although too many through hub airports like Heathrow. More direct services would be useful. It is handy for Glasgow City outside peak traffic times but it can be frustrating waiting in peak hour traffic when trying to get into the city. A train link like they have from Glasgow's other airport at Prestwick would be useful. The international pier at Glasgow is modern and spacious whilst the domestic business pier is OK but a bit outdated. The other domestic pier for Easyjet, GO and Aer Lingus is little more than a leaky nissen hut and probably helps to keep the airline costs down. This area needs upgrading. At busy periods the time taken to check in can be horrendous ...
