Fast approaching middle age, panicking like mad because I need more time. My passion is for travel. Independent travel at that. Without the need for tour operaters and their version of a holiday. Guidebook, ticket and off I go. I can't shake off the bug.

Having just spent the best part of a month out in Goa. My home was slap bang in the middle of Anjuna market that kicks into life every Wednesday at 05:00 in the morning. I feel the place has had its day. Yes the state is full of wonderful Portugese churches, a million and one palm trees, but its not at all beautiful. For me Goa is now spoiled. Now that the large package tour operaters have their foothold and the developers have raped the land its better to go elsewhere. Don't get me wrong Goa has some nice places. Really nice, friendly locals and ok beaches. Though they're not a patch on the beaches to be found in S E Asia, i.e. Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. Also, Goa like the rest of India has a big dog problem, making it unsafe to wander the streets and lanes after dark for fear of getting bitten by a rabid mut hellbent on seeking out some unsuspecting, half-cut tourist to chew on. As happened to me!!! For me Goa should be experienced as part of a grander tour of India, without the help(or hinderance) of a package tour operater who gives you a couple of hours at a site and then packs you onto an air-con coach to your next site. Experience it for yourselves. Take the train, the bus and the rickshaws. Its an amazing adventure and its cheap as chips.

Welcome to India. Would have to agree with the comment below that Goa is very much the new Ibetha or Benidorm LOL! It's really not considered the "real" India so much these days as it's become way too "touristy" in recent years and a hot spot for ravers from around the world! The stray dogs are an issue all over India although I've not been attacked by one out there, I've been quite scared to see them roaming the streets at dusk looking ready to pounce on anyone who goes by! Hi It's not really India!! A friend of mine goes there quite often, and seems he would get teh same holiday in Benedorm! Would have been nice to expand the review a bit - especially about the bribe paid to the police. Larry
