A trip to San Francisco must include a visit to the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. A recent trip there confirms my believe that it is one of the most magnificent structure ever built. This is a synopsis of my recent visit.
The bridge was completed in 1937 and from near its a bright red-orange. Its about 1.7 miles long. The bridge is supported by two large towers and tons of cables. Standing at the foot of the bridge, and looking up, you could feel the enormity of the entire structure.
It is best getting there by car. Park at the Visitor's centre car park and go onto the bridge. Dress warmly as it can get really chilly.
Forgetting the pollution emitted from the vehicles travelling on the bridge, the view of the hills, the ocean and the ships streaming in and out of the river brings a sense of peacefulness into one's consciousness.
A walk on the bridge takes about an hour. It is a nice walk. There are walking pavements on both sides of the road. People like to jog, walk and bike along the bridge. The walkways are also easily accessible by wheelchairs.
At both end of the bridge, there is a visitor centre selling souvenirs as well as washrooms and a small cafe.
I felt so strange standing in the middle of the bridge. I could sense that I am so far away from both ends! In the middle, you could see the city of San Francisco in the distant. The white buildings on the steep slopes of San Francisco always reminds me of Greece, without the Sun.
It is also worth driving acorss the bridge to Vista Point. Take the second exit called Alexander Avenue once you cross the bridge (away from San Francisco). Go left and go under the highway and go up the hill on the right. The road becomes a one way so you must remember to park and turn back before then. It is clearly sign-posted so that should not be too difficult. There will be two places to park, once immediately right next to the bridge and another further down the road.
At the second stop, walk up the hill. The view of the bridge and the city is stunning. The best time is in the morning, when the bridge is partially covered by clouds ... so romantic.
Oh, and the toll to cross back to San Francisco is $5. Well worth it.
Advantages: Exciting, vertiginous, epic Disadvantages: Windy, mucho traffic, vertiginous
What can i say that hasn't already been said of this. Its a lovely lovely bridge. That said, i actually do prefer the Bay bridge - but the two are a little chalk and cheese. Its huge, imposing, windy, filled with very fast moving traffic (going faster than you thought!) lots of tourists, cyclists and at a terrific height above the land and ocean channel. Finding out the facts about the bridge brings home to you what a monumental effort it was to ... ...If you manage to cross the bridge then there's some beaches and woods not far from the far side. Easier by cycle or car. If you have a car take this out to get to the Muir Woods - a beautiful park full of very tall, very wide Sequoia trees.. ...

...be complete without seeing the Golden Gate Bridge. You've seen it on countless films and it is always featured on Holiday programmes. If you're feeling energetic, then why not walk across the bridge or maybe hire a bike (you can hire them from Fisherman's Wharf)
Everybody who goes there has their picture taken with the bridge as a backdrop, so make sure you have your camera with you.
If you're lucky, the sun will be shining and the colour of the ... ...If you're unlucky, the fog will roll in and you will lose sight of the top of the bridge. Needless to say, if this happens, then it can be quite chilly, so make sure you have extra clothing with you.
Another way to see the bridge is from underneath - boat trips around the bay can be taken, just go down to Fisherman's Wharf and you'll see them advertised.
The flow of traffic across the bridge is unceasing so avoid taking the car unless absolutely ...

Advantages: Got to see alot in a short space of time Disadvantages: Slightly expensive. Mostly on the bus
squirrels running about. All were grey squirrels, which my husband hates but I thought they were very cute to watch. They would come right up to the people to try and get food. I even seen one climbing up a girls leg, as I was slightly afraid of them I stayed well enough back so this did not happen to me.
Back onto the bus and we drove then over the famous GoldenGateBridge where we stopped for another photo stop. I have to admit the bridge wasn't as big as I thought it would be in real life. It was another nice view to be seen though.
Overall this tour was good but it suited more people who were older as you were on the bus for most of the tour. I felt that I didn't really get enough time to explore the area.
It was good though if you wanted to see as much as possible in a very short space of time. Granted you would be seeing most ...
San Francisco first strikes you as one of the cleanest cities in North America. The architecture is varied and interesting due to it being one of the oldest cities on the West Coast. The bay has the GoldenGateBridge, Alcatraz, and an assortment of frolicing and barking sea lions. It's a busy port, so you will always see ships. The rolling hills of the city itself, while tiring to climb, make exploration all the more fun. Don't miss Chinatown, an exciting place so big you really can immerse yourself in another culture, and Lombard Street, the 'crookedest street in the world.' Some of the bends in the upper road are nearly 180 degrees. Don't forget to visit the wharves and have they local specialety of clam chowder in sourdough bread, either. It's delicious, trust me. ...
Advantages: Cheap, reasonable accomodation. Disadvantages: Can be quite noisy outside at times.
If you are looking for a really comfortable, clean small hotel with character you need go no further than to book into the SAN REMO HOTEL on Mason Street. It is situated within a few minutes walk of Fishermans Wharf, one of the best and entertaining areas for visitors in San Francisco where you can sit overlooking the Bay eating Clam Chowder in a Sourdough roll watching the seals playing beneath you in the sea. For all you early morning joggers you can run a wonderful scenic route around the beautiful bay area. An amazing view of the GoldenGatebridge and Alcatraz where you can take a boat trip out to the island. I have stayed three or four times at the San Remo. It is furnished with antique furniture and can offer a variety of rooms, some with en suite, starting at around only £50 per night. Telephone (001) 415 776-8688 ...
