They may be cheap and cheerful, but far from bargaintastic, when things go wrong, you really do get what you pay for. I'm afraid this is a long story, but if you persevere, you'll be glad you did.

I have literally just got back from a weeks holiday booked with Golden Sun, on the volcanic Aegean island of Santorini. My boyfriend and I flew from Gatwick with Excelair, for one week in a self-catering appartment in the resort of Perissa at the Perissa II Studios at a cost of £179 each. With a flight leaving at 6am, we were sold on the fact that after a direct flight and transfer of around 25 mins, we would be on the beach by lunchtime.

We left home at 3am to reach the airport for 4am to check-in for our 6am, 4-hour flight to Santorini. At check-in, we queued with the other expectant but sleepy holiday-makers and were told that the flight was delayed by three hours and duly handed our £4 vouchers to spend on airport nutrition. Not particularly thrilled at our prospective five-hour wait, but nonetheless unsurprised by the delay, we were even less ecstatic to hear that we were no longer flying to Santorini anyway, but to the nearby and much larger Crete. This was necessary as the new 767 chartered by Golden Sun to take us there was the biggest plane ever to fly to Santorini and the previous night the Greek Aviation Authority had refused the plane landing permission as they didn't have the legally required fire-cover. We were also informed that in order to get to Santorini, we would have to endure a 3-4 hour ferry trip on arrival.

Still, although disappointed that we clearly weren't going to be on the beach by lunchtime and that we had a whole day of waiting and travelling ahead of us, we were resigned to the idea of getting in around 7pm and going out on the town for our first night.

Now, let me tell you that it took us 33 hours to reach Santorini, knocking 2 useable days off our 7 day holiday. To explain what happened...We left Gatwick at 8:45am, having been told by the pilot that our delay was due to the cabin crew needing a legal three hour rest before flying again. However, we arrived in Heraklion, Crete 4 hours later, got taken to a hotel en masse for lunch whereby we were informed there'd be a 4 hour wait at the hotel until a volley of coaches would shuttle us to the port for a 7pm sail. Chaos was evident when it came to the coaches - our bags went on one coach and having been assured that the next coach would leave almost immediately, we let them go. Forty minutes later we were still at the hotel and when we eventually arrived at the port, our bags lay sorrowfully unattended, stranded in the middle of a carpark. Disgusted to find them like that but relieved we still had them, we boarded the ferry and once again let our bags go into the ever-increasing mountain of luggage nestled at the edge of the cars, just behind the stern doors.

We were allocated a cabin - to share with two complete strangers, who thank God, turned out to be lovely. Next came the tannoy messages. The ferry cannot sail due to high winds on Santorini. The ferry will leave at 8pm. Midnight. 7am. The tannoy informed us that the reps had been contacted and that they 'can not or will not' come aboard. Seeing as it was possible for my boyfriend and I to disembark for a pizza around 11pm, I think the 'will not' was more accurate. At 7:45am the following morning, we awoke to a tannoy announcement instructing all Excelair passenger to disembark for breakfast at the hotel. We hadn't moved an inch.

Grumpily trudging back onto dry land into the fine Cretan sunshine, more coaches took us back to the hotel where we breakfasted and were told precisely nothing.

If you can imagine at this point that there are 550 unwashed, sleep-deprived, unhappy holidaymakers (a Manchester flight had been added to the Gatwick one), all being herded back and forth by a deeply disorganised, incompetent bunch of mis-informed holiday reps. The crowd, whilst calm, had an atmosphere of unspoken volatility.

And so we were informed of the plan for the day - three flights on smaller aircraft to shuttle us the 60 miles to Santorini, suggested priority - the elderly, sick and children first, followed by one-weekers. This was paid no attention to. Various stories emerged, each rep contradicting the next and it was only by chance that we stumbled upon Ms Golden Sun, who failed to introduce herself, seek us out, help or inform us in any way shape or form. She might as well not have been there.

Anyway, to cut an already long story short, my boyfriend and I finally arrived in Santorini around 7pm that day after catching the third of the three shuttle flights that was leaving at 3pm...4pm...5pm...6pm and eventually left at 6:15pm. All the while there were no reps to talk to and for about an hour our flight disappeared off the departures board all together and yet there was no-one to ask about it.

On the coach to the resort the poorly-spoken rep complained that she'd been waiting for us for two days and joked that she expected we were all dying for a beer. She failed to realise that sleep and a shower after our ordeal were the two things we all craved and one passenger apologised for keeping her waiting, although I think his sarcasm was lost on her.

We never received an official apology from Golden Sun whilst we were there and our rep avoided all eye-contact when asked a difficult question and refused to listen to everyone's complaints and comments as calmly and seriously as she should. What little information she did provide us with, with regards to climbing the huge rock between Perissa and Kamari to see Ancient Thera, an old Minoan settlement, she failed to tell us that the site was closed every monday - the day we climbed.

Our impression of Golden Sun was one of imcompetence. Their reps were unidentifiable and unconcerned for the holidaymakers in their care. The resort rep gave it the talk but knew little of any help, provided an unhelpful map and inaccurate information when advice was sought. No body seemed to know what was going on or have any kind of procedure in place. No compensation has so far been offered or is immediately obvious. In comparison, those on a First Choice holiday received £150-250 cash compensation on the first day, free sun-loungers and a meal.

It's your choice, but you really do seem to get what you pay for.

ok. Your circumstances were not good. But it would not of matterd what tour company you had chose then the results would of been the same. your first issue was with the air line not the tour company. Its down to the airline to sort the flights, tour companys pay them so they have to fly the planes. As for the rep having no eye contact with any one. well i can imagine how rude most of the people were when they arrived, and the first person you would shout at is the rep. Did they fly the plane...no. Did they say the flight could not land...no. So would you really like to be shputed at for something compleatly out of your control...no. So it was not the comapny, and if you read the back of any brochure it is the airline who is legally responsible for delays and providing refreshments. not reps or tour companys,

think yourself lucky up until last month I worked for Transjet Airlines who took over all Golden suns flights we had four engine failures in five weeks and we were averaging 19 hours delays on every flight our planes were small with the engines on the body at the back and they were very noisey. They lost the golden sun contract and went bust.

Oh my god - what a nightmare! I almost feel like apologising for Golden Sun, having had two wonderful holidays with them and would actively choose them again. I don't think I have ever heard such a horror story and certainly have never experienced anything like it. I wonder did they ever get permission to land a 767 on Santorini - sounds a bit unlikely to me! I do hope you get some sort of compensation for this and hope it hasn't put you off Greece.
