We booked a last minute family holiday to Limassol in Cyprus over the New Year with Golden Sun, which was very enjoyable and went without any hitches. Having woken up the morning we were due to fly to find it was snowing heavily we were expecting the worst, but luckily Manchester Airport had invested in some super duper snow shifting machinery which meant that we were only delayed for half and hour while they de-iced the wings. We flew with Eurocypria, and the flight both ways was fine although the seats were a bit stingy with legroom compared to other airlines we have flown on. If you book a vegetarian meal or have any other dietary requirements out of the ordinary, make sure you remind them of this at check-in, as they forgot to load our food onto the plane on the way back, and we ended up eating tomato sauce and butterbeans - which, although all credit to the stewardesses for managing to rustle something without meat in up for us impromptu, wasn't quite what we were expecting.
We stayed at the Hotel Arsinoe in the Amathus area of Limassol, which on the whole we were very happy with. The facilities in the Hotel were very good, the staff were welcoming and friendly, and the food was excellent - particularly the buffet breakfast. The Hotel is rated 3* plus, which we felt was a pretty accurate classification.
The only real gripe we had was that as the reception and lounge area had automatic doors which only opened if someone was actually walking though them, there was a lack of ventilation and the public areas got very smoky. This meant that as non-smokers we woke up each morning feeling as if we had smoked a packet of twenty, which although the hotel was very nice in other respects, would put us off staying there again. The restaurant was very smoky also, and for this reason we would not recommend this particular hotel to people who are bothered by cigarette smoke or with lung problems. For devotees of the evil weed, however, we would give it a thumbs up. The in-hotel entertainment was very good most nights and varied, and there is a karaoke bar in the basement under separate management which lets hotel guests in free.
The best rooms are at the front of the Hotel and those with a side pool view, which get the most sun. At the time of year we were there (Dec/Jan) the rooms overlooking the main pool at the back of the hotel where we were hardly seemed to get much sun at all. The hotel does have an indoor pool but be aware that it is very much smaller than it looks in the brochure, and nowhere near big enough to do any serious swimming in.
As it has already been said in another review you get what you pay for, and for what we paid for this particular holiday we felt that Golden Sun delivered reasonably good value. For a deal at the right price, we would definitely consider going on another holiday with them.
