The gilt has long faded on the Golden Tulip

Advantages: At least I wasn't spending my own money
Disadvantages: Plenty - just book a proper hotel somewhere more sensible

The Dutch are famous for many things - cheese, clogs, a relaxed attitude to controlled substances and prostitution, little boys saving towns by sticking their fingers in dykes and of course the bulbfields. What they aren't famous for - and no wonder - is great hotels and hospitality. Of all the countries I travel to, Holland is one place where I can almost guarantee to be disappointed by a hotel - and the Golden Tulip in Zaandam really did live down to all my expectations. Why was I there? Oh I keep asking myself that. What fate sent me to such a god-forsaken down-market crappy Dutch hotel? On the plus side, it's only for one night but on the down side, surely somebody could have found something better than this. I work for a company that's in the midst of divorcing its separate parts in a messy but fairly civilised way. Some ...

Review of Golden Tulip Amsterdam Zaandam, Zaandam

The Golden Tulip

Advantages: Comfortable, Conveniently located, All necessary facilities
Disadvantages: Some may find it a bit expensive

Many of you who might have read some of my previous opinions will be aware that I travel to West Africa quite frequently and one of the destinations that I visit most is Accra in Ghana. When travelling to Africa in general one of the most important decisions you must make is the hotel that you intend to stay in. You need a place that provides you with comfortable rooms, clean food and water, entertainment and security. My hotel of choice is the Golden Tulip Accra Hotel. This hotel is part of the Golden Tulip chain of hotels. Golden Tulip hotels enjoy a high reputation throughout the world. More on the Golden Tulip chain later in this opinion. The Golden Tulip Accra Hotel is located just 2 km from Accra’s Kotoka International Airport and is commonly referred to as the “airport hotel”. Most major ...

Review of Golden Tulip Hotel, Accra

Golden Tulip

Advantages: Location, Good Deals
Disadvantages: Over starred in my opinion

I booked a long weekend for myself and my girlfriend in Amsterdam Just before Christmas 2006. I had a look on laterooms.com (if you haven't used this site before, do it is excellent value) and found the Golden Tulip in Amsterdam offering us a room for 3 nights in their 4* hotel including breakfast for a little under 300 euros. I was sold on the executive sounding nature of the rooms, its central location, traffic free area and of course the included breakfast. We arrived at central stn a little early for our check in time of 2pm, probably somewhere near 11.30, but we turned up at the hotel anyway and asked to check in. The staff were very friendly, took our payment upfront (rather than on check out) and added on the 5% city tax for foreigners (keep this in mind). They were more than helpful in storing our bags for us and suggesting ...
