I booked a long weekend for myself and my girlfriend in Amsterdam Just before Christmas 2006. I had a look on laterooms.com (if you haven't used this site before, do it is excellent value) and found the Golden Tulip in Amsterdam offering us a room for 3 nights in their 4* hotel including breakfast for a little under 300 euros.
I was sold on the executive sounding nature of the rooms, its central location, traffic free area and of course the included breakfast.
We arrived at central stn a little early for our check in time of 2pm, probably somewhere near 11.30, but we turned up at the hotel anyway and asked to check in. The staff were very friendly, took our payment upfront (rather than on check out) and added on the 5% city tax for foreigners (keep this in mind). They were more than helpful in storing our bags for us and suggesting we could have the room a little earlier than the published time, sometime around one, which was nice.
On return we checked in properly and went to the room, keycard in hand. The room was nice, clean and had all the things you would expect, tv, minibar, toiletries, etc but not what I would class as an executive room by any means. The double room we had booked was two single beds pushed together, made up to be a double bed, cue lots of falling down the gap in the night....
The room is definitely overrated as 4*, no complimentary water and old chipboard furniture in a small, though en-suite and clean room
The breakfast in the morning though was excellent , the restaurant was spacious, the staff very nice and the choice on offer exceptional, from a full English to toast and jam to cereal and fresh fruit. All included in the price! Great!
There are no leisure facilities in the hotel, though they do have agreements with a gym round the corner, making this 4* hotel an average room with nice staff and a good breakfast selection in short.
Its location is very good for Amsterdam in all honesty, 5 mins walk from dam square and the same distance from the red light district. There are several reasonable restaurants nearby and some good pubs, so you shouldn't be short should you decide to stay locally one evening, the traffic free square they advertise isn't all its made up to be though. We didn't hear any noise but it is only 20m from the main road on the end of a traffic free square.
Overall a nice place with good value and if you only use the hotel for sleeping rather than dining or leisure its great and reasonable especially if you get breakfast included. If however you are accustomed to 4* hotels you may be a little disappointed.
Quite a good review, but I think that it needs a bit more information and detail to justify a higher rating. Hotel Reviews need lots of info on the hotel, staff, food etc. You might find it helpful if you read and rate some other peoples’ reviews (especially those that have been rated VH or E). It might give you an idea of the sort of things you need to include. It might also be helpful if you had a look at the Ciao guides to writing Reviews and Rating I found them really useful. If I can be of any help feel free to put a note in my gb. Rich
