On the Gosport side there's plenty of reasonable car parks within walking distance of the port. I am not very familiar with the surroundings of Gosport, so apologise for this.

The Portsmouth side has the Spinnaker Tower and Gunwharf Quays within stones throw of the Portsmouth port.
Tickets:
We brought our tickets from a nearby kiosk on the Gosport side. We paid around £7.00 for two adults and two children. On the leaflet I took away with me from my 'cruise ship' there are no references to prices which is a bit disappointing.
The Ferry:
The ferry itself is green and white sort of stripped on the outside. The inside is very clean with upholstered blue seats. There are also seats outside on the upper deck which are plastic and in very good condition.
We went on a busy Saturday afternoon and found plenty of space on board. The ferry is easy to board for pushchairs, and we saw a lady take a moped on board too. There is plenty of room to accommodate these items.
The staff just make sure people are safely on and off the ferry. Unsure of their 'friendability' as they just seemed to do the safety part and sail the ferry. Though the captain wore a nice white shirt and black tie.
There is no on board entertainment and no luxuries apart from the leaflets and toilet. Though the crossing is fairly quick I don't think you would have time to pee. I timed it and it was five minutes tops.
The ferry travel times are:
Monday-Friday inclusive
0530-0630 every 15 mins 0630-0930 every 7 and half minutes 0930-1530 every 15 mins 1530-1830 every 7 and half minutes 1830-midnight every 15 mins
Saturday (the day we travelled)
0530-0930 every 15 mins 0930-1800 every 7 and half mins 1800-midnight every 15 mins
Sunday
0530-1000 every 15 mins 1000-1700 every 7 and half mins 1700-midnight every 15 mins
To travel across the sea it takes around five minutes maximum. It's very quick, perhaps too quick for the kids but just long enough for people who don't like boats.

Other cruises available:
Throughout June, July, August and September there are summer cruises available throughout the week. These cruises are named as the Queen Mary II, Three Rivers Cruise, Cowes Day Trip, Beauliey River Cruise, Hamble River and a few others. Prices for these are available on the leaflet but not prices for everyday crossings to Portsmouth. The prices for these cruises were prices from £5 - £27 for adults and £4 - £27 for children and OAP's.
Also on the Portsmouth side you can visit HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, Submarine MuseumMary Rose and Royal Naval Museum.
Advantages:
The crossing is very quick and you never seem to be waiting long for a ferry as there is always one in the distance crossing over.
We were stuck in traffic waiting to enter a car park at Gunwharf Quays and were at a standstill for ages, so we decided it would be quicker to go to Gosport and take the ferry. Also less stressful. Wish we had gone to Gosport first rather than be in traffic standstill.
