Gothenburg (Sweden)

I am currently living in Sweden and one of my favourite places to visit is Gothenburg, or to give it its Swedish name 'Göteborg' (pronounced Yur-te-boy). Gothenburg is a compact town with less than a million inhabitants, but it still has plenty to keep you occupied... **History** Gothenburg ... Read review

Välkommen till Göteborg!

Advantages: beautiful town, plenty to do, easily reachable,
Disadvantages: can be cold in winter

...Swedish name 'Göteborg' (pronounced Yur-te-boy). Gothenburg is a compact town with less than a million inhabitants, but it still has plenty to keep you occupied...

**History**

Gothenburg was designed by the Dutch in 1621 and bears more than a passing resemblance to Amsterdam, with pretty tree lined avenues running alongside the many canals. Gothenburg made its name during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as an ...
...traders who settled in Gothenburg left a rich architectural and cultural legacy. The Orient also has a strong influence over Gothenburg, due to the strong trading links between Sweden and the Far East, and many Oriental design features can be spotted on the buildings around the harbour. Today Gothenburg is Sweden's second largest city and Scandinavia's largest seaport.

Gothenburg lies on the West Coast of Sweden, with the Göta River ... more

A boozy and more weekend in Gothenburg

Advantages: Things to see, Things to do, The women
Disadvantages: Beer not cheap!, Vodka not cheap!, None!

I guess Gothenburg might not seem like the ideal weekend destination for a trip with the lad's but let me reassure you it would be one to remember. Now I have to be honest here, as I am a bit of a Jackal and Hyde character when it comes to weekend trips away. Yep I like to have more than a few drinks but I also like to have a good look around at what attractions my resident city has. Anyway let me first run you through how you can get to this fine ...
...where we picked up our Gothenburg Card's (see www.goteborg.com) which allow free and discounted entrance to certain attractions and also free use of transportation. Anyway we headed to Liseberg which is a theme park within the City. Dont expect Disney World but it’s a happy little place and they have a few bars also! I managed to pick up my first of three souvenier's here - a green (nucleur looking in fact!) pair of fluffy rabbits for my niece ...

Interesting and friendly

Advantages: smallish, friendly and nice
Disadvantages: I have noticed a rise in violent crime

Gothenburg has been voted the friendliest town in Sweden several times and this is no mistake. Even though it is the second-largest city in Sweden, it feels more like a small town. It has a great amusement park, Liseberg, which has lots of rides as well as a few quiet green spots. Since Gothenburg is on the coast, there are several good beaches (there are tramlinks to some) and there are many islands that ferries go to. However, one must check where ...
...go. Gothenburg is good for shopping and prices are reasonable. There is a shopping centre close to the train station on Norra Hamngatan and on Avenyn there are many shops as well as a few shopping centres. Apart from these places there are lots of shops scattered all around the town centre. Gothenburg has Sweden's cheapest (and possibly best) record shop, Bengans. As soon as I remember what the exact address is I will put it here. Slottskogen is ...

My Stay at the Stenungsbaden Yacht Club, Stenungsund, Sweden.

Advantages: Quality accomodation and food
Disadvantages: A la carte food is expensive

I stayed in the Stenungsbaden yacht club while on business in Stenungsund in the Autumn of 2008. Rooms are available for around 1000 SEK per night. The hotel is located 45km from Gothenburg and gives excellent access to the North of Sweden and Norway ( from Gothenburg, you follow the road signs for Oslo). Stenungsbaden is located on the outskirts of Stenungsund, and is a 20 minute walk from the Bus and Train station in Stenungsund centre. The view from the hotel, more importantly the marina is spectacular. The hotel backs onto a dense forest, which runs from the hotel to the Tjornbron Bridge. The Tjornbron Lookout, which you'll reach after crossing the Bridge also offers a spectacular panorama. I stayed in one of the Racing class rooms, the room was spacious and had everything i required for my stay there, large double bed, TV, desk ...

Sea Scum Still At Large

Advantages: They Have a variety of Routes
Disadvantages: Chancea Are You Won't Want to Use Them

. Particularly if you're taking a car. You'd be best advised to drive the car on the ferry yourself. I was travelling to Gothenburg in Sweden, onboard the Princess of Scandinavia. We left Newcastle at aro und 11, due to arrive in Gothenburg early the next morning. This crossing was fairly uneventful, everything was around average. The vessel had a swimming pool but it seemed mostly closed off. Although the sea was pretty calm they stopped us going in the pool because of the fear of the ship rolling and the swimming pool water rushing out. Seems to defy the point of a swimming pool on a ferry anyway. Many friends I have spoken to have said the same things about the pool. - The Return Voyage - The return voyage was from Hamburg to Newcastle, a route DFDS only operate in the summer. (I think they might have closed it now, but the vessel ...
