Advantages: Tasty, spicy and well balanced. Disadvantages: Awful if you don't like ginger beers.
When we were last in Belgium I got to try another beer that I hadn't come across before. This one was from the De Graal Brewery and was called De Graal Gember. I mentioned it briefly in my review of Tim Webb's excellent Belgian Good Beer Guide and I think it is time to give it the full write up that it deserves.
~~~THE BREWERY.
The Brouwerij de Graal (De Graal Brewery) was set up in 2001 by a gentleman called Wim Saeyans. The brewery is based in the little village of Brakel ~ a quiet place that can be found just off the road from Tournai to Brussels in Belgium. The building that houses the brewery used to be the workshop of a Stone Mason and now has a lovely marble sign outside with the name in gold.
As well as the lovely Gember the brewery also produce a good range of bottled beers. These include De Graal Blond (a hazy ...
Advantages: Breathtakingly beautiful. Disadvantages: The road is not one for the feint of heart
that are located precariously above the sea on the mountains.
Every turn you make on the meandering coastal road brings you to another lovely little village - Positano, Sorrento, Ravello or Amalfi itself.
Towards the sea there is the port, bus terminus and a selection of cafes and restaurants. To the west edge of town on the hillside is an old Cappuchin convent, that is now the Hotel Cappuccini Convento - reached by a lift of green girders - you will see many such lifts around the coast.
Above Amalfi high in the hills is the beautiful Ravello, hovering 1000 ft on the steep cliff.At Ravello are two incredible villas - Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone - you need to book to go ...
Advantages: Spectacular coastline, with attractive towns and good walking Disadvantages: A tourist trap, albeit a superior one
.
Ravello and Atrani
The next morning we headed for Ravello, accompanying our luggage some of the way as it was being taken onwards by car, as far as the town of Maiori. This resort boasts the longest stretch of beach in the area ? which does not make it very long, for this is essentially a rocky coast ? but is otherwise remarkable. From there we walked just the final 9km with a loop inland through lemon and olive groves past the Convent of San Nicola, which looks imposing on its hillside but which we did not visit. This was a pleasant walk, uphill but over undemanding terrain. Again we felt we could have done more, and began to regret having not taken on the full distance from one hotel to the next, though this would have included an ascent of Monte Avvocata, which is said to be very tricky. Maybe regret was the better part ...
