I stayed in the GranHotel Conde Duque for five nights when attending a conference which I had been organising in Madrid last October. As I work for a non-profit organisation my remit was to ensure that my accommodation was not overly expensive - no easy task, as well as being one of the official conference hotels. By booking on Activehotels.com I was able to get a single room for EUR 91 (ca. GBP 63) a night ? coming out at just under EUR 98 (ca GBP 70) a night including the mandatory sales tax. This was substantially cheaper than the ?reduced rate? of EUR 135 (ca. GBP 97) excluding tax being offered for single occupancy of a double room by our conference partners.

This hotel is fantastic....but it should be at the price! I paid Euros 280 for a double bedded room with single occupancy on July 22nd. The hotel claims to be central and it is if Central means the terminal for the bus from the airport! But actually it is about two miles North of the city centre so be prepared to take a taxi for the real centre of Madrid from the hotel. I arrived at Madrid Barajas airport and decided to take a taxi. There is a bus advertised that stops outside the hotel but I am lazy! However I was ripped off! Officially it should cost about 15 Euros from the airport. I know because a colleague of mine took the same ride only one day earlier. Me and my girlfriend decided to visit Madrid last summer. So being the students that we are we booked cheap flights on easyjet. That was the easy bit. The hard part came later when we had to decide on a hotel to stay in.
