For many years I worked for a company that had a US office in New Jersey which I used to visit several time each year. This was a dreary place on a soul-less industrial estate in Dayton that had little to attract visitors. The name Nassau conjures up images of swaying palms, white sand, a gentle surf and a light sweet breeze. Maybe it was once like that. Today though, the reality is more like crumbling concrete, loud cars, rude panhandlers, and the sweet smell of carbon monoxide. Admittedly, it isn't all like that. Paradise Island, and Cable Beach are both attractive resort areas kept in a fairly natural state. Actually, Paradise Island's Atlantis Resort is stunning - an oasis in the cold reality of modern Nassau. Why do people keep coming to the town? Mostly it's on cruise ships. The port is very large, and right at the centre of town, allowing many ships of any size to dock directly without tendering.
