South bay and Harbour. The beautifully designed hotel is rumoured to have a theme of time within the design of this stately building. It has 4 Towers for t he Seasons, 12 Floors for the months of the year, 52 chimneys for the weeks and 365 rooms for each day of the year. The hotels boasts two Restaurants, The Harbour Lights, the main restaurant with stunning views of the Harbour and the Premier restaurant for those wanting a more intimate atmosphere with Carvery and a wide selection of dishes and a coffee shop serving snacks and beverages. There are also three bars in the hotel, the Cocktail Bar and the Cabaret bar offer a relaxed chilled atmosphere. The Cabaret Ballroom is home to our LIVE Entertainment, with shows that will keep you entertained for the evening. Conference rooms are also available for any occasion for up to 200 people catering for all your needs. This is the perfect seaside hotel with the views, good food and great entertainment! WIFI is free to all guests and is available in all public areas of the hotel.
I booked the hotel as a last minute bank holiday getaway. I read some reviews on another site (only once I had booked - oops!), but it was only for a night. I booked a Premier room (worth the extra - see points below).
Staff:
Reception staff were not very knowledgable and we got the same 'I don't really know' response from the same girl more than 10 times in 2 minutes! Restaurant staff were hit-and-miss. I asked about the Premier carvery and was ... ...also did not know how to open the door on the wheelchair ramp - or even if it was available (I had a look myself as there were infirm guests looking to use it - simple push bar!)
Rooms:
Wait for it.......Our room was absolutely superb - 2 singles and a double, room for a travel-cot, seating area, twin balcony, sea view - downside of a Premier room though is no shower cubicle.
On checking out of the hotel I like to have a quick nosey in rooms where ...

Grand Not So Review ofGrand Hotel Scarboroughby
MarkHodgkins
Advantages: None Disadvantages: Come away feeling very ill
The Grand Hotel built in the late 1800s boosted to be the biggest man built building in Europe at that time. Constructed over 12 floors to represent 12 months of the year 52 chimneys, 365 rooms and 4 towers to mark the seasons of the year. In seeing the building and with great imagination you can see how fine and grand it was at that day of is peak. With great views from one side of the hotel overlooking the beach and harbour. 3 fine Ballrooms, 2 ... ...that looks down over the Grand Lounge.
A hotel that's was at its finest in its day and that has been allowed to decay over the years with little money ploughed in and poorly maintained has become the largest free standing heap of rubble in Europe that should have been closed down some time ago.
I began working for Butlins at the Grand Hotel in Scarborough in 1995 in the coffee shop which was converted into a Premier Restaurant which I believe it ...

Advantages: Very close to the town and attractions. Disadvantages: The Grand?? Should be called The Shabby.
...On the 1st of July this year (2006) my partner and I stopped at The GrandHotel, Scarborough in room 402, thankfully for only one night! On first impressions (exterior) the hotel looks great, unfortunately, on entering the very small (double??!) room, these thoughts soon ended. The room was terrible, shabby, dirty and had a used condom floating in the toilet (should have checked out straight away!). I immediately reported the floating item to the front desk (no phone in room), the receptionist was very apologetic and assured us the condom would be dealt with straight away. On returning to the room two hours later, the condom was still there! Thankfully, on returning a further few hours later it had been removed.
The furnishings in the room are cheap and tacky, the bottom of the bed was tatty and fraid, the shelf in the bathroom...

Advantages: It looks nice Disadvantages: Incredibly Shabby
...I had the misfortune to be stuck in Scarborough and needed a hotel. The Grand looked promising (appearances can be deceptive). certainly it charges "grand" prices. I paid what I would expect to pay for an average 3* hotel. I made the mistake of booking one night B&B
The place was almost full,. it transpired with a country and western convention.
The room, a twin, was cramped. It was allegedly ensuite (call the toilet and shower a broom cupboard). The room desperately needed redecoration/refurbishing/cleaning. I have to say that it is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in.
The hotel appears to cater for two separate "classes" which have different dining rooms and different quality of accomodation. I tried breakfast, a big queue to get into the "restaurant" (bizarre) then breakfast a rasher of bacon, a spoon of congealed baked beans...

Advantages: Central for location Disadvantages: Where do I start!
...I'm going to give you an honest, reliable, insider's review of the GrandHotel, Scarborough.
"The Grand" is now, and has been, part of the Britannia group for the past few years. With the promise of a 7 million pound refurbishment program in place, I took the position of Food Services Manager, summer of 2005. I had recently moved to the area and knew little about The Hotels reputation….only through research did I find the marvellous history of the building itself.
Built in 1863 as one of Europe's first purpose built hotels, The GrandHotel boasts superb architecture with the design rumoured to be based on the theme of time.
Four towers represent the seasons.
12 floors represent the months.
52 chimneys represent the weeks.
Originally 365 bedrooms to represent the days of the year.
For entertainment, the Cabaret Ballroom...

To begin with, there was very little space in the car park when we arrived, we just about managed to squeeze into a space but our driver had to get out the passenger side it was such a tight fit!
We later found out more guests would be arriving and were more
I recently spent three nights in the Albus Grand. On arrival we were upgraded to a superior room at no extra cost. I asked the receptionist why she had upgraded us .. she said she wanted us to have a happy day. That was a great start to a wonderful... more
