Brighton Pier

Advantages: Free entry
Disadvantages: Gets very crowded

Seaside piers seem to be a very British tradition and there are many different examples to be found in England and Wales, although oddly none exist north of the border in Scotland. Brighton's pier is one of the most famous of them all. Officially known as The Brighton Marine Palace Pier or the Palace Pier for short it officially opened in the May of 1899. By this date the Victorians and their predecessors had already built many other piers, including two earlier ones at Brighton. Brighton's first pier was constructed in 1823. This was known as The Royal Suspension Chain Pier and still existed in 1891 when construction of the Palace Pier began. At this time the Chain Pier was considered to be unsafe and was in a state of disrepair so one of the conditions attached to the construction of the new pier was that this old one was demolished ...

Oakleigh Guest House

Advantages: A warming, pleasant atmosphere with spotless rooms and good service
Disadvantages: Decor not particularly modern

I currently live in Stourport on Severn in the heart of Worcestershire and recently had some distant relatives come to visit for the weekend and we needed somewhere for them to stay as our house just wasn?t big enough to accommodate the whole family. In the end we decided to book a couple of rooms at the Oakleigh Guest House as I had heard good reviews on the place from friends. ~Location~ Oakleigh Guest House is situated right in the heart of Stourport on Severn town centre so is in a perfect location to access all the local amenities. However it is situated far enough away from the main High Street so that you don?t get the noise from the pubs on a Friday and Saturday Night. The guest house is situated on York Street in Stourport on Severn and is situated right next to the canal lock and overlooks the basin and river which ...

Brighton Pier in East Sussex

Advantages: great transport links along the coast and to London
Disadvantages: if its raining, but can still be good

Brighton Pier was built in the Victorian times and still retains its Victorian splender. This thriving pier has a built in fun fair at the far end with ferris wheel, dodgems, helterskelter and all the old favourites that you would expect from this lovelly holliday resort. There are many fruit machines to play with low or high jackpots. There is a bar on the pier so you can have a pint or two with your lunch or dinner;the food there was very good when I was there earlier in the year. The pier also has several ice cream vendors to keen the children and us older ones happy. From the pier you have a beautifull view out to sea with the many fishing boats passing by and larger ships further out on the horizen, while looking back towards Brighton you see the amazing architecture and the pretty beach although its stones and not sand its still nice to ...
