...Having holidayed in Sorrento the last couple of years I cannot recommend it enough. there is something for everyone in Sorrento and the surrounding area.
Take a trip to Pompeii and Herculaneum for a wonderful experience. Pompeii is much larger than imagined and we visited it over two days but don't go on the organised tours which can be costly. Take the local train, it runs half hourly and only costs a couple of euros. Take the train to Herculaneum which is much smaller but better preserved. The trains stop very near to the excavation sites.
For a slice of how the other half live take a ferry or hydrofoil across to the beautiful island of capri- you never know you might spot a hollywood star!
The Amalfi coast is renowned for being the most beautiful coastline in Europe and it certainly lives up to its reputation. Visit Positano...

Advantages: Scenery, cultural. Disadvantages: Too hot.
...The best holiday I ever had was in Sorrento. It is a truly magical place that I will never forget and I hope to visit it again when I can afford it (it wasn't a cheap holiday). I stayed in a hotel called 'The Sorrento Palace' which was absolutely beautiful. The first time I walked into the hotel my mouth just fell open because I had never stayed anywhere as grand as that. It has a six-tier pool, several restaurants and bars, a gym, and a small shop. The bedrooms are air-conditioned which was nice because it was so hot while I was there. The most memorable parts of my stay here were: The food (four course meal every night); and the piano bar.

...is filled with tourist shops, gelateria and some more up market designer stores.
Sorrento has two marinas. Marina Grande and Marina Piccola, conversely it is Piccola which is the larger of the two and is the departure point for the ferries that cross to Naples and the surrounding islands as well as the cruises along the Amalfi coast.
Maria Grande is the smaller of the two and is home to a number of fishing and pleasure vessels and is well worth a visit. It has a small beach area and some nice sea food restaurants.
Both marina can be reached by public transport or by walking however be warned Sorrento is a coastal town perched on the cliffs and while the walk down is pleasant the same cannot be said for the return journey.

My family and I have now stayed at Johanna Park Hotel twice. Once in June 2005 and again in June 2008. This hotel is simply excellent. Johanna and her fantastic staff make you feel right at home and couldn't be more helpful. It's like no other hotel... more
