Cruisin' - THE GRAND CANAL

Advantages: An amazing sight
Disadvantages: Venice is SO expensive

When visiting Venice, it's hard, if not impossible, to not come into contact with the Canalasso. Well when I say come into contact, most people don't actually do that - they'd end up a trifle wet if they did. More accurately, it's nigh impossible to not see, or travel upon the said waterway. The Grand Canal (to give it it's English name), is one of the first things most visitors see when they arrive in the city, leading as it does, from the lagoon at Santa Lucia Railway station and the huge, and hugely expensive, car parks. It snakes through the city in a giant back-to-front S shape from here to the St Mark Basin at the opposite end of town. At 3800m long and varying widths of between 30-90m, it's said to be one of the few man-made structure visible from space...although I'm not sure it was so much man-made as 'enhanced', and I ...

Review of Grand Canal, Venice

Venice the city of Sighs!

Advantages: Absolutely breath taking views around every corner.
Disadvantages: Very expensive packed during the day with day trippers.

the day and at night. Church towers and domes rising up into the sky and beautiful buildings such as theatres and opera houses and palaces are absolutely amazing on the eye. St. Marks tower, St. Marks square, the Basilica of St. Mark and the Doges palace not to mention the water front! St. Mark?s area is the hub of Venice and it would be criminal not to visit this wonderful square. The shops selling locally produced Venetian glass on the island of Murano all in different colours and hues, hand made masks and all kinds of Italian delicacies. The cafes and trattoria?s and most of all the tiny alley ways leading to new vistas and of course the canals are wonderful. There are lots of hotels and palaces and art gallery?s to lose yourself in. The Grand Canal is wonderful to traverse on one of the vaparetto (public buses) and you can hop ...

Review of Venice (Italy)

Venus in Venice.

Advantages: Lively, interesting and different.
Disadvantages: A bit expensive

and all the goods for consumerism - The boat ambulance and police force -just about every thing. I only saw one person in a wheel chair and I would say that Venice is not really a place for the disabled but it made me think, I saw one bridge with a stair lift and some larger toilets at the airport. Maybe if someone stayed in a hotel on the Grand Canal they could manage with help but their itinerary would have to be planned thoroughly. So what is Venice like? We have all heard that although it smells it is also very romantic. In winter it does not smell unless you are near building works, we must remember that sewage goes into the water but saying that the water looks as clean as the Thames in London. There was a lot of renovation work it is probably due to the time of the year as the Venetians get ready for their summer visitors ...
