I'm a huge fan of York and frequently pay visits to this historic town, I have stayed in a fair few of the good hotels York has to offer. As a nice weekend treat in before christmas in december I decided to try The Grange as it holds a very high reputation throughout York and is generally seen as a quality hotel.
Anyway on to my stay at The grange, first impressions the building is situated within waking distance from the town centre which is handy but the building is not set back from the road so noise can become a problem in the front rooms as the road in which it is located (bootham) is a main road in York and is busy at most times.Next onto the parking faciities, I consider these to be quite inadequate for a hotel of this size it has 40+ rooms with little room for more than 20 cars and also needs to allow space for people dining there but not staying in the rooms, this can get quite tricky as on our first visit our car had be moved twice in order for others to gain access.
The building itself, very attractive interior and exterior in my view clearly well maintained which is a good sign, the decor throughout the hotel is quite classical with traditinal furnishings and lots of red carpet which seemed quite grand to me but others may just see it as out of date.
Dining, the hotel offers two options, 1)the brasserie- simple, tasty, well priced food in a cosy environment.2)The Ivy restaurant which was more expensive but not over priced had a menu of using higher quality ingredients, but its a very small dining space and if full would feel rather cramped, the food was good but not great as you would expect from an award winning restaurant, the service was average if not abit slow considering there were only four other tables! Was hardly blown away. by this experience so would reccommend you opt for the brasserie if you choose to stay here.On a plus side for the food the breakfasts were top notch and offered everything from homemade muesli(yum) to a full steak dinner though I'm sure few would want to tackle such a thing in the early hours of the day.
As for the rooms these were nice with the decor following suite with the classical theme, the bed was very comfy, the en-suite bathroom was clean and had bath/shower, also the room had the benefits of satellite tv, direct dial phone and hairdryer, the hotel also offers the added benefit of wi-fi(wireless internet connection) ideal for guests on business trips.Prices for this hotel start at about £115 per night for a single and can go up to £260 for a suite, brekkie included . On the whole I didn't have a bad stay at this hotel far from it really as everything was fine just not great which it should be at these prices and its high star rating. I came away feeling that i'd enjoyed my stay but did feel that I could have got alot more for my money had I chosen to go elsewhere. I have ticked to recommend to this hotel which may contradict some of the things I have said in this review but is quite a hard to on to call really as if the hotel didn't have such high expectations to live upto then I probably would have appreciated it more, the only major issue for me is the pricing which is far too steep for what the hotel has to offer and this affects the whole outlook on hotel for me. Thanks for reading and hope this helps xx.
