Advantages: Nice outside, location Disadvantages: Not what I expected, not really a church anymore!
I went to Amsterdam wanting to see some of its historic buildings. I love old churches so the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) was high on my list. I was very disappointed by my visit as the church fabric was mostly covered up by an exibition. Read on...
HISTORY:
Despite being called the 'New' Church, the church was actually built in the 15th century (although it has been extensively rebuilt due to fire). The building is mainly Gothic. From the early 19th century the Nieuwe Kerk began to overtake the Oude Kerk (Old Church) for prestige. Since then all of the monarchs of the Netherlands have been inaugurated in the church and royal weddings have also taken place there.
ACCESS:

and good old Samuel Pepys who was christened in old Saint Brides. Saint Brides is a survivor. The present church dates from the 1670s and is one of 24 renaming Wren churches built after the Great Fire of London. It is located on the eastern end of Fleet Street near where it joins with Ludgate Hill. Its easy to get to a number of buses including the 15, 11, 25 and 4 run past it. Blackfriars is the nearest tube station (Circe and District) but it is ...
establish my credentials. Temple Church is much more than a tourist attraction or pop culture icon. First and foremost, it is a working church and a site of great historical significance, as well as a welcome haven from the drudgery of the City rat race. Although I no longer work in London, business takes me there regularly. I like to visit when I can and spend a few moments soaking in the atmosphere and palpable sense of history imbued in the very fabric of the place. As you can imagine, I take a dim view of noisy tourists intruding on this oasis of solitude and peace.
GETTING THERE
Temple Church is just off the south side of Fleet Street, almost directly opposite Chancery Lane. Head down the fully pedestrianised Inner Temple Lane (it?s through a stone archway with a Pegasus on each side and two heavy black doors, one of which is ...
