Cons: The parking area is not next to your tents, unlike other campsites where you park your car right next to your tent. And the camp area is quite rocky, so it is difficult to pitch your tent (do check the area before pitching).
And it is rather expensive to camp, £4 per person and £2 per car per night.

When the Lake District was finally open after the foot and mouth situation, we decided to give it a first visit.
Where we went:
Amberside town was rather crowded but still okay. We spent 5 days there but it rained for 4 days while we were there. Though the weather was bad, the beautiful lakes and hills sort of made up for it.

Where you camp depends on which hill range you are trekking...Being adventurous we tried to trek up Scafell Pike on our second day in lake district. Hence, the nearest campsite would be the GreatLangdalecampsite managed by the National Trust, which is abt 10 miles from Amberside.

invariably a 3 or 4 bedroom house still occupied by the owner. Most include breakfast and a guideline cost is £25 per person per night in high season.
Campsites are available all over the Lakes. The two I have been too are "Park Foot" near Pooley Bridge. This offers camping facilities, plus static caravans and several cottages. The Dungeon Ghyll campsite in GreatLangdale is also highly recommended. This is camping only and fills up very quickly in high season.
There are also hotels scattered throughout the lakes, including some 4 and 5* ones, but I have never stayed there so I can't really comment.
