It has never been fashionable to be Greek with respect to fashion, music and film. Maybe it’s great to be Greek if you are a mathematical genius or a philosopher… but entertainment? Besides breaking plates at weddings, I must say, nobody was fully informed of the true Greek! The real McCoy.
Now however it seems certain changes haven been taking place with more stars admitting to their Greek roots and heritage. With Jennifer Aniston and George Michael out of the closet, both children of Greek nationals, and the latest film in the cinemas ‘My big fat Greek wedding’, it has become fashionable to be Greek. Hurray!
Here is a bit about the Northern part of Greece, also known as Macedonia, which has created some recent heated debates around the Balkans and the Mediterranean.
In Thessaloniki the north eastern influence is more obvious. It starts from the fresh food and also applies to the cakes, like Baklava and Milfay, which are very sweet, covered in Syrup and have their roots in Turkey.
But it's not just in the fresh food. The laid-back lifestyle, which is so typical for the Greeks becomes more pronounced here compared to Athens where everyone is always in a hurry. The night scene and the bars and clubs are exceptional, they play great music and I can promise you you will not come across anyone dancing Sirtaki as seen in Zorbas with Antony McQuinn.
The restaurants, which you will know cater for a lot of tastes but as Greeks love their meet it is not too easy to find a vegetarian restaurant. I guess you can always opt for a Greek Salad, just say, choriatiki! Which means, a village salad. Delicious!
The city is also the site of the renowned Thessaloniki Film Festival in October-November, which is an experience in itself. With regards to fashion, the Greeks might not have any designers like the Italians but Macedonian women are considered the most fashionable in Greece and if you are into shopping you will find unusual styles in the many shops around the centre.
Another good thing about clothes shopping is that Greek women tend to be a bit more curvy and there is no way you will come across a shop that does not cater your size.
You will not find a lot of green areas in Thessaloniki but there are enough historic sites to keep those happy that enjoy their sights. Being the old city it is there are of course loads of museums to be visited, that is if you are into that kind of thing. There you will see why the British have been arguing the case of the Elgin Marbles. Most statues have been left outside the museum and have started to go grey, which is not a great sight.
Thessalonici is the second largest city in Greece with a population of 1,000,000 inhabitants, is one of the oldest cities in Europe.
Since then, Thessaloniki has become the chief city of Macedonia and its has one of the most important ports. The beginning of Christianity was also marked in these areas by Saints but it's not something I can talk about much as I don't have a leg to stand on.
Do you feel like visiting Greece? Opt for Thessaloniki because there you have it all! People don’t start to party until after 1 am because it’s too hot in summer. The beaches close by in Chalkidiki are sandy and are not too crowded. There are beach parties on every night and although Greek people always complain they don’t have money they eat out every day in the tavern. Fresh fish, wine, ouzo…
The climate in Thessaloniki is Mediterranean, although if you visit between November and March, the winter season, expect the odd shower.
If you are into sightseeing you have to see the White Tower, which once stood with many others, surrounding the medieval city, until the Turks destroyed all but two in 1866. You will notice Greeks like to blame the Turks for most things but I try not to get involved in the disputes between the two.
The city’s most famous landmark, the White Tower, once known as the Bloody Tower, is not all that white but stands out next to the port in the evening. Lastly the nightclub scene with it's open air raves and the foam parties are amazin fun. Everyone has a dive in the swimming pools of the nightclubs as it is too hot not to go for it.
One thing I find annoying though is men wolf-whistling and chasing you down the road to tell you your green eyes twinkle like the stars of a Greek summer sky. Slimey! But I guess you can get them everywhere.
