Tucked away in the Austrian mountains, not far from a little town called Gruenau, lies one of the friendliest and most enjoyable little backpacker hostels I have ever come across.
After having my wallet stolen in Amsterdam I was eager to find a place where I could just relax for a few days, and the flier I found advertising the Tree House hostel seemed just the thing. In fact I ended up staying closer to three weeks, the last two of which I worked in the kitchens in exchange for board!
Run by a friendly Austrian-American couple, the Tree House is quite affordable (from around £8 per night). Activities include horse-riding, bike hire, hiking, skiing and snow-boarding (depending on season). Breakfast is included and an evening meal (always delicious) is around £4. Other facilities include internet access, laundry, a room full of popular videos and not one but two bars (one complete with pool table, dartboard and that football game where you spin the little men around).
Though the nearest town is a couple of miles away, it's a pleasant bike ride down (or if you're nice to Jessie she might even drive you). There are several shops and pubs and a tourist information centre as well as a gorgeous outdoor pool (which actually has a bar, so you can drink a pint while you sunbathe! Brilliant!). If you're feeling a little more energetic there is a gorgeous lake about 10 miles further on called Almsee, where you can hire paddle boats and so on.
The Tree House is also pretty easy to get to - just get a train from Wels (about halfway along the line between Salzburg and Vienna) to Gruenau and give them a call - they'll even pick you up from the train station.
