(+) All round good pick for those wanting Caribbean on a budget. Great beach! (-) Probably not quite up to 5* standards like some other hotels, but we didn't mind!

There's a vary large choice of places to eat at but do be warned if you want to go to the speciality restaurants book them as soon as you arrive because they only have limited places and they book up very fast. In our opinion the best is the Romantica, this was the first time i have had lobbster as part of an allinclusive deal with nothing extra to pay. This hotel is also a true allinclusive as you will not have to pay extra for primium brand brinks ice creams snacks and most things are available 24 7. This brings the cost of the holiday down even more as you need very little spending money. Room service is the only thing that will inccur a charge. Also phone calls home are very expensive if you use the hotel phone in your room, but you can now phone home using your mobile as long as you are not with vodaphone or any other network that has american connections. This hotel also has golf carts to take you arround from place to place and they run all day and night so if you have some one with mobility problems you need not worry, they will take them so they don't have to walk. The beach does get prity busy but you can always get a bed and fresh towels, but not always shade this can be a pain mid day if you like to get out of the sun.
Advantages: Fantastic scenery Disadvantages: Food was horrific, trips were a rip off
...a link to the beautiful Guardalavaca beach. The rooms were cleaned everyday and the staff all spoke english, french, spanish and german and were all eager to help. The only problem was the food. The dinner in particular was generally some kind of congealed mess made up of breakfast and lunch's leftovers.
All in all, I will say that I had a good holiday (despite the food) and I grew to understand that in a country such as Cuba, begging is justa way ...

Advantages: Beautiful Beaches Disadvantages: Mozzies and opressive
...Cuba is a beautiful country, guardalavaca is a bit out on a limb and a long long long way from havana. If you want to go to havana then stay somewhere else like caya coca then it is easier to travel. We were advised by our rep not to fly internally in Cuba as the planes are old and not particuarly safe so please travel by road only.
Be prepared to be sniffed by the dogs on the way in, Cuba has a very strong policy of no drugs, which is good. Some ... ...suspiciously.
If going to guardalavaca be prepared for the mozzies, they are terrible and buy the insect repellant when you get there, ours does not work!. Take sun cream with you there isnt a great deal to chose from out there and take your own cards/games etc.
I can honestly say i relaxed over in Cuba, there isn't much else to do. The trips are very expensive, but then they would be as Cuba now relies on tourism.
It was an experience, i'm not ...

Advantages: fantastic beach, local flavour Disadvantages: food is indifferent
Guardalavaca is purpose built resort about an hour's drive from Holguin airport. It features the hotels Atantico, Guardalavaca and the newest La Brise. Staying at the Guardalavaca Hotel was good value at US$45.00 per night all inclusive but for an extra US$30.00 La Brise is a better choice for the luxury traveller. In the Guardalavaca, the rooms are comfortable and all are en suite. The bathroom has a shower. Noisy air conditioning units dominate ... ...Being inclusive means that you can drink enough to drown out the sound. The portable tv picks up US channels and some European satelite channels but not UK channels. Most of the fellow guests are French Canadians with some Mexicans and Europeans. Thomas Cook US$ dollar travellers cheques were readily accepted in reception and a 3% commision for cashing them was not excessive. The beach is the classic white sandy beach with shady palms and beach bars. ...

Advantages: All Inclusive, Beach front Disadvantages: None that I found
not get paid that much and we have always left toiletries and medicines
If you want a nice quiet relaxing holiday but can go off exploring if you wish then I'd recommend this hotel.
As with any hotel, what suits one does not suit all. Just remember that Cuba does not have the facilities like Europe and the US so you need to go with an open mind.
Experience Cuba in Guardalavaca and you'll see that the people are friendly, the weather is great and the sea is warm. ...
Advantages: Excellent diving Disadvantages: Quiet area, not much nightlife
I dived at Guardalavaca on the North Eastern coast of Cuba in August a couple of years ago. The fish life we saw on dives there included Tuna(Which I saw feeding - that was pretty good),Barracuda, Moray eels, Snapper, Grouper.
We dived on 2 small wrecks (35-40ft) which looked like they had been sunk deliberately for diving, they weren't very intersting bud did attract the bigger fish. The sea temperature here was a constant 30c (86f) so I didn't bother with a suit after the first couple of dives, although I did get a couple of small stings, so it might be worth wearing one if that is a worry.
Of the 14 dives I did 11 were 30m+, 1 to 41m,so I would not recommend this as an ideal place for novices, although the dive operators did offer training courses. There are two dive operators in the area, Ocean Lovers at Esmeralda Beach ...
us. Taking pencils and colouring pencils for local children is also a good idea.
Before you go double check with your bank and tour providers that you are taking the correct currency. Not all bank cards are welcomed in Cuba, especially if they are affiliated with an American Bank, something we found out the hard way!
Would I go again? Definetely.
Would I recommend it for a family? Yes, but I will say this - if you are looking for a lively holiday this may not be for you.
My husband has always been interested in Cuban history and the trip to Santiago gave him a greater insight than any book ever could.
On the flight to Cuba the plane stops off at Havana/Varadero before continuing on to Guardalavaca (a fact which no-one thought to tell us! - We thought we had arrived only to discover we had another flight to go). ...
