The Guggenheim Museum is an absolutely fantastic building. If you like architecture, it will fascinate you. I could spend hours just looking at it as, depending on the light, it looks so different. It really is beautiful. It's had such a huge impact on the way Bilbao is perceived and perceives itself, it really has given them their confidence back. The city has cleaned up its act, and has opened up to the world. The only problem with this museum is that the content doesn't always match the exterior. It's very hit and miss, sometimes fascinating, sometimes a waste of time: from Armani fashion through the years to the history of motorbikes. So do find out what exhibitions they have on before you part with your money. It can also be very busy, depending on day and time of year.

Update: it's a museum of modern art, it costs about 10Euros to get in. It opens every day except Mondays, from 1000 till 2000. It's not very big, only a couple of floors; if the exhibition is particularly interesting, it might take about 4/5 hours to see it.

They have guides, and audio guides in different languages. it's very well connected as it near the town centre. They have access for disabled people, and a cloakroom where you can leave your coats, rucksacks, etc.

Bilbao itself wasn't bombed, it was a town nearby called Gernika (hence the Picasso painting by the same name), which was bombed by the German Luftwaffe during the Spanish civil war. I believe it was the first ever civilian town to have been bombed.
