I went to the campsite at Gwithian with a group of friends; our soul purpose was to surf for which the setting is perfect. The campsite is very reasonably priced and quite basic, a far cry from many of the over developed 'holiday camp' style campsites which crowd the Cornish North Coast. Prices start at £9 per night for 2 persons, tent and car, unserviced pitch, low season; up to £18 per night for 2 persons, serviced pitch, high season. The facilities are again basic but clean although there are only a few showers and wash basins. There is a small shop but don't rely on it for all your provisions. It is likely you will need to drive to Hayle a few miles down the road to stock up properly. The first night we ate in the very conveniently located Pendarves Arms. The food was good old fashioned pub grub, reasonably priced. The clientele are a mixture of families and surfers from the campsite and nearby static caravan site with a few locals propping up the bar for good measure, the atmosphere on the whole was friendly. The beach was a reasonable walk away, accessed through the neighbouring static caravan site. We hired wet suits and boards at the beach, I wouldn't have been keen to be carrying a lot of stuff as the walk did involve negotiating a steep stairway. Once you had passed the slightly unsightly quarry at the back of the beach the views were fabulous and the surfing fantastic, the beach is well manned by the local life guards. The second night we headed into St Ives, about 5 miles down the road. The campsite owner was helpful and gave us taxi numbers so we could all have a drink that evening. The campsite is ideal for hardcore surfers and lovely for families. There wasn't a policy for single sex or large groups but this campsite is unlikely to attract hardcore party goers. There are some nice touches like the visits by the milkman, a pizza van and some local ladies selling extremely good cakes. You know you are in the heart of a Cornish village. The nightlife is pretty much restricted to the Pendarves arms unless you want to drive. That said it was nice to be away from the hoards of 18-30's in Newquay.
Advantages: Friendly, welcoming owners. Superb beach near campsite with lovely views Disadvantages: Simple campsites facilities only. Just Good Showers,Toilets and Shop
...just at the back of Gwithian Towans - a huge sandy beach which is a real favourite with families and surfers.
The campsite has some Electric pitches available, although most are just Standard pitches.
It's a fairly traditional Cornish campsite so there are only a few, but good quality, facilities; Hot Showers, Nice Clean Toilets and a small shop.
Clair also does a lovely Cornish Cream Tea and her garden cafe is open from 2pm until 6pm in the summer ... ...popular in the summer.
Gwithian is a good location for visiting the 'Far West' of Cornwall and attractions such as the Tate Gallery and Barbara Hepworth's Sculpture Garden in St Ives, Land's End, the Minack Theatre, Penzance and St Michael's Mount, the gardens at Glendurgan and Trebah and, finally, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall at Falmouth.
Just a few of our suggestions, but of course you may prefer places like the Lizard Peninsula, with ...
