The Gyle Shopping Centre in Edinburgh which opened in October 1993 is one of 4 main shopping centres in Edinburgh. The others are Cameron Toll, St James Centre, Waverley Market(Princes Mall) and Ocean Terminal. There is also Westside Plaza but this isn't exactly what you call a main shopping centre and Straiton park,Craigleith(The Quarry) and Fort Kinnaird are all Retail parks.
The Gyle is a approx a 10 minute drive from Edinburgh International Airportby car/taxi. It is approx a 30 minute drive from the City Centre depending on the time of day and the route you take to get there as it is often very congested nearby due to it being directly opposite Edinburgh Park(Home to the RBOS headquarters and a whole host of big companies) .The area round the Gyle is mostly businesses and there is are many houses nearby within walking distance of the Centre and there are alos two train stations nearby(both about a 15 min walk or so) which are South Gyle and Edinburgh Park. Journey times from South Gyle to Edinburgh Waverley takes approx 9 minutes. There are a numer of buses that go the there Gyle from the City Centre(CC) which include the 12 and the 22. The 12 takes a very long route and can take up to an hour so i wouldn't recommend taking it unless you have too. On the other hand, the 22 is very quick and goes a much quicker route along West Approach Road which takes about 20/25 minutes or so again depending on traffic levels and time of day.
The centre itself is mostly on one level as the food court is upstairs. There are 3 car park entrances and plenty spaces for everyone-infact like most shopping centres, the shopping centre takes up a larger area than the shopping centre does!. There are numerous child spaces close to all the entrances and Disabled spaces which are even closer and plentiful all over the place.
There are approximiately 60 units for shops and these are used in a wide variety. There are two anchor main stores at either end of the Centre which are occupied by M&S and Morrissons respectively.
The other well known shops that have an outlet in the Centre include Next, River Island, WH Smith, Birthdays, Boots, The Disney Store, New Look,Dr and Herbs, Clintons,Dorothy Perkins, Boots,O2,Barrats,Clarks etc.
The sizes of the shops all vary considerably in size. For example Next is quite a large while Claires Accessories is a very small store even though they are not very far apart from one another.
The Centre itself is very light and airy as it has a glass roof which means there is natural light above you most of the time. It is also always clean and has a lot of space. You regularly see cleaners walking about the centre cleaning and they are also very pevalent in the toilets too which is good i suppose.
There are many bins around the centre so there is no excuse to litter at all. As with all shopping centres, the gyle is non smoking and regular announcements make you aware off this. At all entrances you will find ashtrays and buckets for disposing of your ash and ends.
The lift and escalators take you up to the food court. There a number of counterincluding Burger King, baked potatoes, pizza hut express, singapore sams, a sandwiches a cake counter.
The Gyle shops open about 9.30am Monday to Friday until 8pm and 9pm on a Thursday. Whilst Morrisons and M&S have their own opening times. Saturday is 9am until 6pm and on a Sunday 10am until 6pm. Around Christmas time the opening times change to longer and some stores stay open until 10pm or even midnight.
In the middle of the centre i s the Customer service desk. Here you can ask for advice or help with anything to do with the centre however it probably unlikely that you will need to use this at all. There are various cashpoints at the front doors and in safeways as well as M and S too.
Enjoy your visit here if you plan on going along to it!
