...the free shuttles to other h top hotels. Santa Susanna was quite lively but Calella and Lloret de Mar had reputations as more interesting. Royal Sun is located in Santa Susana, a small place located between Calella and Lloret de Mar. It is a fantastic hotel which is right on the beach (10 metres) - you step out of the hotel and you can go straight to swimming and sunbathing. We (two adults and two teenagers) were all inclusive so right after the beach we would go to the outside bar and have some lovely cold refreshing drinks. Most people who were on all inclusive were sensible people travelling as part of a family but there were a few older men who sat around from the morning till night drinking heavily (they were no trouble though!)

The buffet food was really lovely - even the fussy eaters were able to find something delicious. The fresh fruit desserts were really good. There was a nice balance between fish and meat - also there were enough veg options for the non-meat eaters. The chocolate desserts were delicious but the breakfast cakes must have increased all weights by half a stone! The buffet breakfast was the best we have had out of all the four star hotels we have stayed in. It was always hot and fresh, whenever something was about to run out, it was very quickly replaced. There was lovely fresh bread to toast, everything needed to make a full English breakfast and lots of European cakes. There was enough to make breakfast into a three course meal!

The family room was nicely decorated and the blackout curtains were amazing because we slept late. However, the room was slightly cramped when all four of us were in at the same time because there was little space to put our suitcases. The sea view was a huge bonus - although it did get quite cold at night and we had to turn off the air conditioning! The cleaning maids were wonderful - the beds were always beautifully made and the free samples were always replenished. The towels were regularly replaced. We went to sleep around midnight but those with younger children may have been troubled by the noise from outside bar which generally stopped around midnight but affected those with a sea view.

The entertainment was one of the best points of the hotel. The previous hotels we visited lacked a strong entertainment programme but this hotel was very organised. The second night there was a flamenco night which was so good. There was a male and female dancer and a guitar player - all three were brilliant but the male flamenco dancer danced so fast we got dizzy looking at him! Make sure you catch this show if it is still running. The next night was a Brazil night which was equally enjoyable - there was about seven entertainers dancing and performing. There was fast Latin American dancing and a slow more ballet like dance but the best had to be the male dancing with fire - it was scary yet incredible!

There were a couple of nights for younger children including a magic show and some children's perfomers but we went elsewhere. We talked to some people who had younger children - and the children loved the activites and the reps.

The all inclusive aspect of the trip had some real advantages (apart from having drinks and ice cream almost whenever we wanted) because we were able to very discounted entry to amazing experiences outside the hotel paying mainly just the travel costs. The medieval castle night with dinner was just spectacular - there was a story line about good knights on horses versus the baddies on horses while we ate a three course meal including an entire chicken each! Of course the goodies won! After the show, there was a really fun flamenco show and the dancers were so quick and talented. The second night out was to a dancing show called Lloret Palace which was such a variety of dancing from riverdance to flamenco. Neither should be missed.

As we went in July, we were able to take advantage of the free shuttles to other h top hotels. Santa Susanna was quite lively but Calella and Lloret de Mar had reputations as more interesting. It was a really good idea to provide free shuttles because we were able to explore Costa Brava without having to pay anything for transport. On visiting the other hotels, we also decided we prefered the Royal Sun especially compared to the Royal Star which seemed very 3 star.

We considered going to Barcelona - it was about 6 euros each for the train but we have been there many times before.

We paid around £300 each for 1 week 4* allocation on arrival all inclusive. (last minute deal) We had been offered the Royal Sun for £375 each but we turned it down - so we saved money and got a wonderful hotel! It is a lovely hotel, with many things to do during the day and night! The excursions are certainly unforgetable!
