Advantages: Lovely promenade and old town, great weather
Disadvantages: Not many restaurants in the hotel zone

we were leaving to come home, we found the airport had a very good selection of shops and restaurants to kill time before a delayed-as-expected flight. The airport is located near the Marina, in-between the resorts of Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta. The only taxi service available is the extortionate 'authorised-airport-taxi' set-up, which cost us 195 pesos (just under £10) to our hotel in the hotel zone. That may not sound too bad, but coming back we picked up a taxi right outside the hotel and it cost 50 pesos (£2.50) for the same journey in reverse. There are 3 main parts to Vallarta, and we explored all of them. PUERTO VALLARTA includes the old town and the hotel zone. We stayed on the edge of this and it was an hour's walk along an uninspired road to reach the proper old town. Alternatively, busses run this route too ...

Bucerias - near Puerto Vallarta

Advantages: Quiet, hot, not over comercial
Disadvantages: Long flight from the UK,

Bucerias - near Puerto Vallarta. The small town of Bucerias on the Pacific coast is as far removed from what you would expect from other Mexican beach resorts like Cancun as is imaginable. True, they both have beautiful waters on golden sands but that is where the similarities end. This tiny town that has just a handful of hotels on the out skirts is very traditional Mexican looking; chickens running round dusty streets, a pretty white church and buildings that are mixture ornate structures and some run down properties set against the backdrop of the ocean. Though sometimes quite rough the warm waters are a terrific blue colour and when the sun sets on the ocean it makes the long flight from the UK worthwhile. Whittlebury Hall Hotel and Spa

Advantages: Pleasant staff, facilities, closeness to Silverstone
Disadvantages: Remoteness

the buffet as many times as you like. However, it can be difficult to get served tea/coffee. Quite a few times I've had to go without because I've been running late and not able to get a responsive member of staff to serve me. The hotel markets itself as being a spa and corporate events hotel and also makes a lot of the fact that it is located very close to Silverstone race course. I sometimes feel that there's a bit of a contradiction between being a spa and a corporate events hotel. I remember being at the hotel on Valentine's Day a couple of years ago while on a course and there were lots of couples who were staying there on one of their spa deals - most of the couples weren't particularly appreciative of the fact that they were sharing their fine dining experience with several tables of rowdy twenty somethings taking advantage of the free ...
