CARMONA (not a back-seat driver)

Advantages: More history than you can shake a centurion's spear at
Disadvantages: May be too quiet for some

Carmona sits on an elevated piece of land commanding sweeping views of the Corbones valley, around 30km from Seville. This is a very fertile region so it's no surprise that this strategic site, one of the few high points in the area, has been settled by humans for a long time. How long? I'm not going down the road of historical time-lines, but let's just say that there is evidence of human settlement from the neolithic period. It was during the Roman occupation that the town flourished, and apparently, the old town still follows the original Roman urban plan. The defensive gates, Seville and Cordoba, are Roman, but the most important Roman site in the town has to be the Necropolis (more on that later). The town's prosperity continued under almost 500 years of Moorish occupation, and indeed, was a major player during the reconquest ...

Review of Carmona, Seville

A Palatial Hotel fit for a Queen

Advantages: A wonderfully characteristic hotel
Disadvantages: None

Carmona is a town with a very long history and is situated about 30km east of Seville. It lies astride the NIV Seville-Cordoba highway so the town is very easy to find. The Alcazar de la Reina Hotel is situated in the heart of the old town. It's not hard to find as it's more than adequately signposted, but it's still a bit of an ordeal driving to it. The old town was not designed with the automobile in mind (in fact I doubt whether the wheel was even invented when much of this place was built!) and you must negotiate a torturous and convoluted route through the incredibly narrow streets and lanes (all one way). The streets are so tight, it could be quite hair-raising - I don't have much hair so I was alright. When we eventually cleared the claustrophobic streets, we found ourselves at one of the highest points of the town with a car ...

Review of Alcazar de la Reina Hotel, Carmona

The Queen's Palace

Advantages: A wonderfully characteristic hotel
Disadvantages: None

When planning a recent trip touring Andalucia I did quite a bit of research on finding suitable hotels. Various things are important to us: location, comfort, amenities and last, but certainly not least, expense. In the course of this research I came across a site called bancotel.com, a Spanish travel agency. They sell 'cheque-books' which can be exchanged for various travel-related deals. To cut a long story short, I managed to book a total of 10 nights at various hotels with all of them costing only ? 50 plus tax. One of the hotels we booked was the ALCAZAR de la REINA in Carmona. CARMONA is a town with a very long history and is situated about 30km east of Seville. It lies astride the NIV Seville-Cordoba highway so the town is very easy to find. The hotel is situated in the heart of the old town. It's not hard to find as ...
