After deciding to book 2 holidays (one in April to Tenby and one to Spain in October) we decided that we'd spend summer at home enjoying the garden. However, after the endless rain that seems to have dominated this summer, we decided enough was enough and looked around for a last minute deal.
We've booked with Haven loads of times before and I'd remembered that I'd seen a report on "Wish You Were Here" some years back for Haggerston Castle In Northumberland. It looked pretty good and is five star rated, so I searched the Haven site for this park.
I ended up booking a 3 star caravan (Aug 11th - 18th 2007) as this was the cheapest option. It cost £349 for the full week with all passes for the 4 of us included. I thought this was quite reasonable for 4 people in the height of summer, but I was a little wary as we usually book gold (sometimes silver) accomodation. These options were a heck of a lot dearer though (approx £200 more!!!)

So, we arrived at the park (roughly a 4 hour drive from Manchester, without stops) and checked in very quickly. We overheard someone moaning about the state of their caravan (mould, damp, smelly) and the fact that the first one offered to them had been even worse!! Tried to put this out of my head which was hard as I'd stumbled across a holiday review site a few days before going on holiday which had SLATED haggerston castle!
Anyway, we grabbed the keys and headed for the van.

The first thing I noticed was that the carpet was filthy. However, it was hardly surprising as the heavy rain had created a lot of mud! We'd literally only just stepped into the van when there was a knock on the door. One of the housekeeping team had been instructed to clean the carpets! Happy Days! (We'd been stuck in traffic due to a bad accident on the motorway and had phoned ahead to let them know we'd be later than expected so I think they left us 'til last)
Anyway, when he'd finished, the carpet looked much better!
So, the caravan itself had a living/dining area, a kitchen with microwave, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. The fabric and furnishings were quite modern and it's pretty much what I'd have expected with a 3 star caravan to be honest. The metal plate on the caravan chassis stated it was a 2003 model.

This was basic accomodation so although it wasn't dated, there were no frills (you should have heard my 12 year old daughter when she realised the TV had no remote!!!!) Have to be totally honest though and say that the toilet seat was only just hanging on and the lock on the bathroom door needed some jiggling to get it to lock. The kids bedroom door had no handle and our bedroom curtains showed evidence of damp (slight mould spots) but this, in fairness was all.
I have to say though, that if this had been gold or silver standard, I would have complained. In retrospect, was I right to keep quiet?? After all, I did PAY for this!
I just found it a bit off that someone hadn't simply tightened the toilet seat and screwed the door handle back on (we found it in a cupboard). It felt like they had the "oh well, it's only standard accomodation, what do they expect?" mentality. They are a well established company though, so maybe they get away with it! No excuse in my book!

Anyway, on to the site itself. It's very big.......but I can honestly say I've been to slightly smaller sites that had bigger entertainment/leisure areas (Hafan Y Mor and Presthaven Sands in Wales and Craig Tara in Scotland) The website boasts of a beautiful Italian Walled Garden, but most of it was being remodelled and was actually in bits (bet it will be nice when it's finished though) There's a stables on the site which my daughter loved, as she rides every week. It cost us £40 for her to go out on a 2 and a half hour hack and beach ride (as riding goes, that price is quite reasonable believe it or not!!) She loved it and spent ages racing on the beach with a new found friend. For inexperienced or less experienced/younger riders, there's the option for a 20 minute ride around the park for £8 (£10 with professional photo)
The boating lake is very nice and there are some gorgeous, extremely well maintained (private) caravans around the waters edge. There's the option of hiring a pedal boat for half an hour. It seats 2 adults and 3 small children at a cost of £6 per boat. I have to say, I get ever so slightly hacked off with Haven when they charge extra for things on their site!!! It really gets my goat! However, with some negociation, hubby and myself and the kids (aged 18 and 12) all got in one boat (there was no way I was paying £12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

There's also quad bikes (small ones suitable for younger kids) trampolines (ditto) crazy golf (dire, forget it unless you are bored to death!) All are charged as extras (disgraceful!)
There's a very well maintained golf course (I hate golf though) at (another) charge of £8 per adult for 9 holes.

There's an indoor and outdoor swimming pool. I didn't go in the pools (they've outlawed whaling!) but hubby and daughter did. Must say the outdoor pool area is quite nice and has loungers around it. The restaurant on the site overlooks the pool and it has an outside decked area with seating/tables. Son and I enjoyed watching them swim while we enjoyed a drink (£3 for house doubles!!! Yay!) When the sun is shining and it's hot (sort of) it almost feels like you are abroad!........almost!
This restaurant serves a good variety of meals and I think is very reasonably priced. We enjoyed it when we ate there anyway!

There's a Chinese restaurant on site too. It cost £8.90 per head for an all you can eat buffet. It's a small venue with a small selection (comparing it to the ones in Manchester) but very nice all the same. I was SUPER impressed with the hygiene!!!! Here is a restaurant that puts the desserts in the fridge and DOESN'T have a spoon resting in a bowl of water which everyone shares to scoop out the ice cream (that is disgusting and very bad practice!) I'd recommend booking though as it gets VERY busy. I booked a table for 8 O'clock and managed to jump the very large queue. It lessened off though around 9.45pm (it opens 4.30pm-11pm)

There's also a Burger King and chippy on site. Burger King is the usual bog standard (in my opinion) the chippy was HORRIBLE!! The chips were just about edible and the fish was just awful, well overcooked. Don't bother unless you are liable to die of starvation (and lets face it, that shouldn't be possible!!)

There are 5 drinking areas. There's the Show Bar, the Aqua Bar, Carnaby's, the Sports Bar and The Tavern. The Tavern is a pub style bar and is available to the over 18's only (yay.....an escape from the MANY kids!!) but in all honesty I didn't go in there as I have an under 18 year old. Carnaby's is the family bar and hosts the family shows with Bradley Bear and Rory the Tiger (when my kids were little they LOVED this but at their ages now I would be worried if they were influenced by a 7 foot talking bear and tiger!!)
The aqua bar is the one I mentioned earlier, that overlooks the pool. This closes around 9.30pm.
The Sports Bar (which states it's for owners only, but appears to be for anyone) was ok for anyone who likes watching sports (big screen tv) but was also very hot (a ploy to increase bar sales???......cynical.....me!!???)
Bar prices in all venues, I have to say, are reasonable. Nothing out of the ordinary at all, and the afore mentioned house doubles are good value as are the 4 pint pitchers priced from £8.60.

On to the entertainment (and I'm specifically referring to the Show Bar here) which.........I have to say, I found a bit naff. It all felt very dated, cheesy and bog standard. To quote Simon Cowell (who I'm pretty sure has never stayed at a Haven site in his life, bless him!) it was "distinctly average". However, I defy anyone to not go back to their caravan singing or miming the party dances to "Big Fish, Little Fish, Cardboard Box" or "Sexy Eyes"!!!!!!!!!
The staff (on the whole, who are now know as FunStars and not Haven Mates) are very gregarious and upbeat. We did, however, find one or two quite aggressive in their "we're having fun and you should be too" mentality. One, who shall remain nameless, even got quite arsey when he noticed that not everyone was getting up to join in the usual "we're on holiday and so therefore will behave like complete arses" frolics! He said.......and I quote........ that "people who have no personality and sit there with faces like slapped backsides should stay in their caravans and not spoil other people's holidays".
Have to say, I didn't see anyone's holiday being ruined by the "quiter" set. They were far too hammered on the house doubles to give a sh*t!!!!!!!!!!!!

As this review is now something akin to a small novel, I'll try to summarise!!!
Location: Nice, but you need a car as there's nothing within walking distance. Nice places to visit would be Edinburgh (about an hour and 20 mins drive) Lindisfarne (AKA Holy Island, about 15 mins) Berwick (35 mins) Seahouses and Bamburgh (25 mins) Alnwick (40 mins) and Alnmouth Bay (40 mins) ALL TIMES ARE APPROXIMATE AND DON'T ALLOW FOR TRACTORS WHO FREQUENTLY CLOG THE ROADS!
Price: Reasonable, and if you manage to secure it with the SUN vouchers, possibly even more reasonable!!
Overall: A good site (good, not excellent.......not quite sure why it deserves it's five star rating!) but I feel that staff don't pay enough attention to detail..........it's annoying when little things like the pool tables that don't have the right amount of balls/no cue tips/no bulbs over the tables (especially when you pay extra) are evident.
Most of this though, in fairness, has to do with poor parenting skills (is it acceptable that your kids smash pool cues over the tables and then lob them across the room!!???)

Maybe this review is tainted because we didn't book the highest standard of accomodation, or maybe it's because we booked in peak season? Or maybe, just maybe, it's because as a family we have actually outgrown Haven and all it has to offer. Maybe we are just showing our age!
All together now....... "Who's Got Sexy Eyes????"
WE'VE GOT SEXY EYES!!!!
