Wow! Well, as I write this, I have only been home from Greece for four days and although am now back into the boring old routine and miserable weather, I still can't help but feel relaxed and refreshed after a spectacular Greek Odyssey all of my own!
My partner and I stayed in a small town called Pefkohori which is in Halkidiki, on the Kassandrapeninsula. Halkidiki basically consists of a three prong peninsula, a little like a trident that sticks out of Greece! The other two peninsulas being Sithonia and Athos.
Pefkohori is absolutely stunning. It is a small town which seems to have more of the local people around than actual tourists which is a nice, refreshing change.
The town has lots to offer including one of the best beaches in Europe which actually has four blue flags!! The sea is one of the clearest and bluest I have ever
witnessed. The only slight downfall about the beach is the fact that it is a sand AND shingle beach, and the pebbles tend to get in places which sand doesn't always reach, making swimming or paddling a little uncomfortable at times.
However, sunbathing on the beach is also an experience in itself. Firstly, the beach here is busy but not overcrowded, and is occupied by both locals and many other nationalities. If you prefer to sunbathe on a bed, as opposed to a towel, then all you need do is simply pick one of the many beds scattered on the beach, make yourself comfortable and someone will be around to ask for payment shortly. Two sunbeds plus a parasol costs only 2000 drachma, which is the equivalent of four pounds, which is all you have to pay to have the beds until 9pm!!
Secondly, you can't help but laugh at the many doughnut sellers who stroll along the beach, shouting, "Fresh doughnuts, doughnuts fresh!!" in their best possible English!!
Opposite the beach is a long stretch of supermarkets, gift shops and beautiful Greek tavernas and restaurants. If fish and seafood is your thing then you are definitely at the right place, however, if like me, the thought of seafood makes you come over all wobbly, then there is PLENTY of food options to choose from, including many beautiful Greek dishes to try and English options if you prefer. My personal recommendations are Kleftiko (a lamb dish, in which the lamb has been cooked in the oven for nine hours...beautiful!!); Mousaka, which has the look of lasagne but is actually potatoes, aubergine and lamb with mincemeat, and then of course there are the deliciously refreshing Greek Salads, topped with Feta Cheese.
The local tipple is a lager called Mythos which you will crave for once you arrive back on home turf. I also recommend the cocktails, 'Sex on the Beach' being my personal favourite!!
It is so, so cheap to eat and drink out here, in fact you can't even throw your money away here, and you find yourselves tipping more and more to give the food and fantastically friendly service the justice they deserve!!
At night, the stretch of restaurants, et al, become busier and slightly livelier, a few of the bars begin to play the music just a tad too loud at times which can be a little off-putting. If loud, IS your scene however, there is a nightclub in the town located on the road parallel to the main stretch called 'No No.' I personally never went in but I hear that it is worth a visit.
The main stretch also comes alive at night with the various stalls that appear as the sun goes down!! Such stalls sell corn on the cob; bags of nuts and then of course there are the typical artists, hair-wrappers and henna tatoo artists!!
Further along the main stretch is the small concrete pier where a couple of the locals' stunning boats are moored in at night. There are benches all the way along the pier where both locals and tourists sit to relax and socialise in the evening. It is also a stunning view from here as the boats and the whole main road are lit up, which reflects in the calm sea.
During the day, admittedly, Pefkohori isn't the liveliest of places which is why I thoroughly reccomend it for a relaxing, quiet holiday, most ideally for couples. However there are many places there where you can hire cars, mopeds and bicycles in order to explore more of the area.
We personally hired bicycles, which only cost the equivalent of eight pounds for two bikes for the entire day!! We cycled into the next little town along the peninsula, Piliouri, which is a beautiful little town simply consisting of quaint little tavernas and is virtually untouched by tourists.
In the opposite direction is the town of Hanioti, which I personally don't recommend as it is much more built up here, and there isn't much to see there other than tall, unattractive hotels.
If you do choose to hire a car, then there is a large water park about an hour away from Pefkohori which would be ideal if with children.
There are also many trips advertised for trips to Mount Athos, situated on the peninsula of Athos, closeby. These are boat trips, which are a nice day out, but are seriously overpriced and over-rated. Athos is a peninsula on which only monks allegedly live, although on the trip, my boyfriend took a closer look with his binoculars, and to be honest, we weren't convinced that this wasn't anything more than a tourist money-spinner! The trip also takes you to the miniscule town of Ouranopolis, another tourist rip-off, merely consisting of gift shops and tavernas!! Nothing to see here I am afraid!!
However, as mentioned, I thorougly recommend Pefkohori, Halkidiki to couples and families, for a beautiful, memorable and relaxing holiday!!
The nearest airport is in Thessaloniki and the transfer time from the airport is approximately one hour and forty-five minutes.
