I live in Hamburg and study meteorology since three years. In my opinion I live in the most interesting and exciting city in Germany.
With 1.7 Million inhabitants it is the secound biggest city in Germany. It is in the north part of Germany and it is famous for the port. It is one of the biggest ports in Europe.
A lot of people say that it is the port witch gives Hamburg the special atmosphere. I can only agree. If your are in the nightlife on a Saturdaynight and you walk to the port ( it is in the centre of Hamburg) it is very relaxing to drink your beer, watch the big ships and heer the noise of a port. I like it.
But in Hamburg there is much more. Also famous is the Reeperbahn. It is famous for all the erotic shops but here are also the main attractions of the Hamburger nightlife. In this area are pubs, bars, restaurants, theaters, discos so densely concentrated like no where else. For every visitor this place is a must.
Hamburg is much more alternativ than any other city in Germany. Politically it is far on the left. Drugs like marijuana are illegal, but no cop in Hamburg will stop a person with a joint. This is not imaginable in bavarian cities.
For joggers I can recommend the Hamburg marathon. In my opinion this marathon is better than the one in Berlin, because here are much more sprectators.
So if you want to visit Germany I can recommend to visit my hometown. Enjoy it

Hallo Landsmann. I'm German too and have been in Hamburg for some days. It's really a nice and cool city, I enjoyed ever day (and night) there. The relaxed drug politic will change now I think thanks to Mr. Schill and the new government. But the flair still stays in Hamburg.
