Hameln is a small town in North Germany with a medieval town centre. It's near Hannover and in the attractive scenery of the Weserbergland area. There are many restored stone and timber framed buildings of the Weser Renaissance.
In the middle of the town centre you are standing on the Osterstraße, that's where an old Garnison Church called the 'Holy Ghost' built in 1713 is. Today there's a Saving Bank in it. Oposite is the 'Pied Piper's House built in 1603 and it's a Weser Renaissance house.
Also in this street is the 'Leisthouse' built 1589 which has a museum in it.There are all about Hamelns city history, the Pied Piper legend and others.
When you go straight you see on the right the 'Hochzeitshouse' also built in the style of Weser Renaissance.Today there is the registry office and the town archive in it. On the gable are a chime with clockwork figures of the Pied Piper legend.
Here is a place called the Pferdemarkt. And in the summer on a terrace here the story of the Pied Piper was presented by actors in historical dresses every sunday. I think this story is most well known in many countries. Also in the summer a musical called 'Rats' was presented, every Wednesday afternoon and it is very popular.
Than you turn left and walk straight along the 'Bäckerstraße' where are also old houses and when you turn to the right there is the Church of St. Boniface. A Gotic and roman style Church which was built in the 12th century. Very interesting is the glasworks in a historical Pulverturm.
Near this church is the river Weser, a sightseeing tour by riverboat is something you must do. There are two bridges across the river, you can go over one of them to the other side and by bus you can ride to the Klüt mountain. There you have a marvellous view of the town.
In the summertime it's great sitting in the pedestrian zone, there are many coffee houses where you can drink coffee or eat icecream and watch the people which pass by. Or you can go sightseing in the medieval town centre.
Hameln is a small towm but worth a visit.
