The legend of the Pied Piper belongs to the city of Hameln like the Tower Bridge belongs to London. This story made Hameln world-famous. I thing you have heard it once. For those of you who don´t know it, have a quick look at the end of this opinion and you get a quick introduction.
Hameln is a good idea for a day trip when you are in Bremen or Hannover. From Bremen it will take you about two hours by car, using the A 27 and A 7 to Hannover and then the B 227 to Hameln. From Hannover it can be reached in about half an hour. Local trains take you to Hameln central station (Hauptbahnhof) from all towns around and the train station is just 900 meters from the centre.
Follow the rats painted on the pavement as a „rat-trail“ to show you the most significant sights, boards with information are situated along the trail. Lots of sandstone and half timbered houses can be seen in the centre. Hameln was reconstructed and refurbished during the 70´s and 80´s of the last century. Go for a stroll through the streets, have a cup of coffee or an ice cream in one of the little cafe´s or in a street cafe and let the public pass by. Of course you shouldn´t leave without having seen the open air performance of the pied piper if you come between May and September every sunday at 12:00 noon. Three times every day the clockwork figures can be seen outside the Hochzeitshaus.
In summer it´s a good idea to have a boat-trip on the river Weser with the „Oberweserdampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft“ This word is a well known tongue twister in german. Perhaps you try the english version: „Upperwesersteamboatcompany“. They do regular trips on the Weser and you can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the Weser mountain area.

In my opinion, Hameln is a good trip for those who like to relax, visit ancient towns and tiny, shops. People, who like action should go anywhere else...
now the story of the pied piper:
In the year 1284, a strange man appeared in Hameln. He wore a gown of colourful cloth in many shades and claimed to be a rat-catcher, promising to deliver the town from all rats and mice for a certain fee. The burghers agreed to pay him the reward, and the rat-catcher produces a small pipe and whistled. Soon, rats and mice came creeping out from all the houses and gathered around him. When he was convinced that none had remained behind, he walked out of the and into the river Weser; the whole pack followed after him, fell into the water and drowned. But when the burghers found they had been delivered from this plague, they regretted their promise of a reward, and they denied the man his money, so he left in anger. On 26th of June he returned, though, in the form of a hunter of frightful appearence, with an odd red hat, and while everyone had gathered in the church, he once again let the sound of his pipe ring throuh the alleys. Soon, not rats and mice, butchildren, boys and girls aged four and older, came running in great numbers. Playing a while, he led them out the eastern gate and into a mountain where he vanished with them. (Taken from: „German Legends“ by the brothers Grimm)
